So, a mate of mine went for a walk on the beach today and stumbled across some wreckage. The geodetic design obviously points to Wellington. But is that the case or is it from something else? There was more there but he couldn’t carry it. Looked like it had been washed up very recently. The packet of cigarettes are just to give an idea of scale.
There was also an aircrew boot with a date stamp of 1940 on it which means it was potentially a fatal crash.
Obviously i’m not giving the location away as we now want to see if we can identify the aircraft, especially if it transpires lives were lost.

also that metal cylinder thing is from a sonobuoy for detecting submarines dropped by a shackleton or nimrod

I recognise the 3rd item, its one of those parachute things the army or RAF used at that beach when they did training back in the 70s I find heaps of fuses from those and the container in your photograph it should have a string pulley thing in it

To me the last item in post 18 looks more like the remains of an Anti-G Suit.

Can’t see any Wellington numbers on those bits. One looks like it might have an ‘AW’ inspectors stamp (the ‘A’ is missing). Worth remembering that at least one Whitley was lost in Spey Bay. If you find any SP or AW prefixed parts they’ll be Whitley.

What’s the item in picture 3 in post 18? It looks like an immersion suit to me. Certainly not from the Wellington wreck, more like it’s been dumped at sea or washed overboard though the dark green colour does indicate it’s an aircrew suit.
Post 20, picture 2 looks like a brake chute pack, or similar. Perhaps that and the immersion suit are u/s equipment from the airfield dumped in the sea in the 1970’s or 80’s.

I’ve seen very similar items to your first photo in post 18 cast in plastic or bakelite. It could be the base of an old telephone. Never seen one in iron, though.

Hi,
The only way for sea recovered parts is to register them with the Receiver of Wreck within 28 days before you become a looter.
The R of W will then seek the owner for you – you are no longer part of the process so you will be wasting your time in contacting MoD.
Even the RAFM will need to declare the Dornier to the RoW to keep the paperwork straight.

The RNLI Record of Service is:
MAY 17TH. – BUCKIE, BANFFSHIRE.
A British aeroplane was reported to have crashed, but nothing was found except wreckage. – Rewards, £2 13s.
At roughly 14:30 hrs the Wellington was seen going into the waters off Spey Bay, 4 miles north north east of Buckie.

All the above advice is for aircraft wrecks on land.
For aircraft parts from the sea a much older procedure is needed to prevent you becoming an illegal looter.
