Had a bit of spare time today so I went to West Malling. I knew it wouldn’t be good but I thought the control tower was to be preserved. The tower is a good example of that style of building generally and is a historic building in it’s own right in a historic locaiton.
However, there’s no money in history so its having extensions to the sides built and according to people I asked it will be a Costa on the ground floor and offices above. Costa seem to have a strictly applied corporate style, if it’s applied here it will ruin the building.
Photo attached, I hope. To give it context, the dumper truck is about the front of the leading edge of the starboard wing of the FW190 that was placed there after it landed at West Malling.
The Anti Aircraft tower is all but invisible from the road, hidden by uncontrolled tree growth.
The H blocks and Officers Mess all look in good condition but they’re owned and used by Tonbridge and Malling Council
