Westland Whirlwind Fighter Cockpit, information needed…

I need a big favour from someone to help with the completion of a Westland Whirlwind CGI model I’m involved with…

We need accurate lists made with photo’s of each individual instrument to enable a CGI working cockpit to be made for the model Whirlwind…

This will be a flying model with the flight model based on the trials from the A&AEE Boscombe Down on Whirlwind P.6997 test flights…

We need 2 lists made…

List number 1, should contain detail of any dials, gauges, switches, levers, panels or components that are specific to the Westland Whirlwind Mk I (P.6984 & Subsequent) production aircraft

List number 2, should contain any dials, gauges, switches, levers, panels or components of a generic nature to allied aircraft of that time…

I have the ‘Pilots Notes’ photo’s of the late production cockpit for you to use and a large detailed photo of the prototype cockpit with most of the instruments common to both but placed differently…

Also I can send some attachments of drawings of the late production aircraft cockpits, which are numbered for your use. It would be nice to have photos (Colour would be nice, but B&W will do if you could describe their colour with the photo) of the individual instruments we need to model…

As you can see it’s quite a job, but nothing ventured…

Can anyone help, if so PM me?

Stuart.

I wish you the best of luck with your project. I’ve made 3D models for computer games for years and I know how frustrating it can be trying to find reference material for some of the rarer stuff. 🙁

Thanks OneEighthBit, if I’d known how difficult getting all this information about this bird was going to be… Well, I can’t say I have’nt enjoyed every minute of it… 😀

From Issue 63, Winter 2008 of ‘The Digger’ of the Fenland & West Norfolk Aviation Museum.

Ray Wood may be able to help you.

MrBlueSky,

If you pm me with an email address, I’ll forward copies of the documents I did for you all those years ago.

They will give you instrument and switch types, and Air Ministry Stores References where I could identify them. The rest is up to you.

I could point you at an excellent set of illustrated guides which I am sure would be of enormous value to you in this and other projects involving wartime British aircraft cockpits….

Walter: Stuart, you may find taking a look at spitfirespares.com helpful. They not only sell Spitfire stuff and every instrument listed is illustrated with a nice colour photo so you could do some matching with your Whirlwind panel photos to identify the various instruments, maybe not all of them but I guess it would be a good start.

Thanks Walter I will take alook… 😉

I did most of this many years ago for someone who was supposedly modelling a Whirlwind for a flight sim programme – was it you, and if so, what became of the project, as it all went very quiet?

My God, yes it was me, although I was not the modeller, I was the scrounger that was collecting the info to make the model for the flight sim… 😉 It all went quiet because the chap making the model chucked the whole project, and knowone else wanted to take it over as they were all to busy with their own projects. I found out later it was not made in the correct manner to import it into the sim, so in fact it was worthless… Sigh!

Then to cap it all some little ******s decided to break in and steal thecomputers and the backups I had made with all the scanned data, which included unfortunately your list and your email and everyone else that was involed with the project… 😡 Gutted is not the word that could describe how I felt then, lucky for me they left the original papers alone 😉

The Police never got the thieves or my computers back, but by then it was to late to find another modeller to start over. So after a while I started scanning it all over again and eventually found another modeller who had already started to make the Whirlwind. The exterior model is now nearly ready to begin skining… But the next big job is making the cockpit, which brings me here again asking for help with instrument lists…

Funny old world… 😉

Air Ministry, I would be forever in your debt if you could help us again. This time though I will make sure to print a paper copy, just in case!

Regards

Stuart

Here’s a earlier low resolution render of the models…
