Westland Whirlwind HAR9 Paint Scheme
Hello Scott
The correct scheme for your Whirlwind is RAF Blue/Grey BS381c ref 633 (often referred to in RN as Dark sea grey but not to be confused with BS381c ref 638 which is the code for Dark Sea Grey – do not use this spec)
The correct dayglo colour is red/orange for the UK SAR aircraft of which yours was one. The dayglo orange is only for HMS Endurance Flight aircraft of which yours is not one.
Please refer to Brian D. or John App. at NEAM – Dave? who was working on the mark 9 when I last visited NEAM (BAPC meeting) was given a disc with the full MK 9 APs on, which includes all painting and stencilling references. Any of these will know how to contact Alan at the Yorkshire Helicopter Preservation Group (aka – Whirlwinds are Us)
If you have any difficulty in obtaining the paint (apart from raising the money) please get in touch.

Scott either PM me an address for Neam etc and I will put a copy of AP119a-0601-A Aircraft Surface Finish and Markings General and Technical Information in the post to you on CD.
The scheme is on that amongst others as well as general painting, specs, corrosion treatment and markings information….
In the mean time, is what you are after?

have put roundel, letter and number layouts on here too

XN258 is a HAR.9. The only (accurate) scheme you can go for on this aircraft is the RAF Blue-Grey and Fluorescent Red/Orange that she wore whilst with either HMS Hermes SAR Flight as ‘336/H’ or with RNAS Culdrose Station Flight as ‘590’.
The last time EDSG and Sky was applied was to the early HAS.7s.
A complete chapter on Camouflage and Markings will be included in our forthcoming helicopter book, hopefully due out by the end of the year. If your Project Leader wants to contact me direct, then I’m happy to help wherever I can.
Rgds

Always loved the scheme on my local RN Whirlwinds – dark sea grey and dayglo orange.
HAR9 XN310 at RNAS Lossiemouth (HMS Fulmar) Station Flight in the late 1960s. The aircraft was lost after ditching in the English Channel 16/4/73…
