[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-01-03 AT 12:16 PM (GMT)]Well, I’m back after an odyssey through Italy!
I trekked as follows:
IOM-MAN British Airways, BAE ATP
MAN-FRA Lufthansa, A320-200
FRA-MXP Lufthansa, A319-100
LIN-FCO Air One, B737-800
FCO-LIN Air One, B737-300
LIN-LHR British Midland, A320-200
LHR-MAN British Midland, A320-200
MAN-IOM British Airways, BAE ATP
I took a day trip from Milan to Rome mid way through my break, courtesy of a present from my fiance.
All quite humdrum, although the LHR-MAN link is a shambles once more – they ALWAYS loose transfer baggage on these flights, they always have and don’t seem to care about it. BMI seem a little worse than BA I think. Also, LIN takeoffs in Northerly directions are v. steep (to clear the Alps, I suppose…) which worried my fiance a little.
The Italians don’t like airbridges (unless you’re on a flag carrier!) and Milan is incredibly foggy…spooky, when the SAS crash was also at MIL.
I’m doing some more trips in the next few weeks (breaks in London and in Dublin) so I’ll post a more detailed report then. Right now…I’m exhausted.

RE: What a drag!
Correct, I couldn’t find a pic of G-MAJF. Not that I thought it mattered to upload the sister ship instead!

RE: What a drag!
It’s a nuisance. BA have denied people from the Isle of Man the ability to take long haul flights with baggage, without physically carting your own bags around London or on the LGW-LHR bus.
They refuse to transfer bags LGW-LHR. The only way to transfer bags through to your final destination is to fly with them IOM-MAN-LHR and as I’ve said, they have a poor record with transfer bags on this route. As was once said, BA*tards!
Anyway, gripe over. I just got back from Dublin. This is my 4th or 5th visit there, not sure which exactly. Nice city, I found the Chester Beatty library at Dublin Castle this time. Amazing collection there, illustrated books and texts, very worthy of the “European Museum of the Year” they boast of.
Anway, flew there and back with BA. Euromanx are the main operator on IOM-DUB now, but when I booked a few months ago BA were only 2/3 the price so I chose them instead.
Outbound leg was on an ATP, rego G-MANC. The flight was empty, roughly 25 pax if that!
Inbound it was a J41, G-MAJF. Flight was even emptier with 9 (honestly, 9 pax! I kid you not!)
Saw lots of Ryanair and Aer Lingus aircraft, and not much of anything else. It was 737-200 city, looks like FR base all their older jets at their Dublin base?

RE: What a drag!
BA and BMI are both really bad with transfer bags LHR/MAN. I don’t know why, but there is always a small crowd (say 10 or 12 pax) at the carousel whose bags didn’t turn up.
The annoying bit is that the airlines don’t care. This has happened for years now. I lost a bag in 1998 and again last week. I’ve flown the route many more times than that, but only with cabin baggage apart from those 2 ocassions. This means passengers often try to take too much weight and volume into the cabin rather than check bags in, which is insane really!
The annoying bit (BA and BMI are both quilty) is that if you arrived on the last flight of the day, they always tell you the bags will follow on the first flight the next day. They NEVER do, hopefully early afternoon is when they usually follow.
I was tired, dishevelled and grumpy…and the airline basically lied to me and gave me crap service. On this basis one has to question the allocation of blame for “ground” rage incidents!

RE: What a drag!
BA lost my luggage before when I was travelling MAN-LHR-DEL (Virgin) they sent my luggage to terminal 4, where it sat, until I found a helpfull lady from Virgin who went on a mission to find my bag. Virgin was responsible for my luggage but it was infact BA’s thought, I even received some compensation from Virgin which was nice. Im flying MAN-LHR-CMB at the end of March for a holiday and I think I will get the luggage checked through to LHR only, which is more hassle for me really. May fly BMI down to LHR as i think BMi and Sri Lankan Airlines are part of the same alliance.

No, I’m going to Dublin for a few days with my better half. Outbound is ATP, inbound is J41 according to my itinerary.

RE: What a drag!

RE: What a drag!
Well there is an ATP, a J41 and 2 146 flights coming up….
I’ll post a report after them, because I have a fair few observations to get off my chest!
I planning trips to Zambia (probably BA B777 ex-LHR) and Australia (probably BA/Qantas B744 ex-LHR) later this year so I’m quietly building up my frequent flyer points for a sneaky upgrade on one of these long flights!
