dark light

What a Gem I taped off the T.V., R.A.F.1935.

And I stayed up till after 4am watching it 😮 ,
and it was definitely worth it 😎 .

What Fantastic footage, and not a Monoplane in sight anywhere  .

A real good insight to life in the RAF in 1935,
Such a happy and relaxed, jovel bunch of lad’s in the day’s before the dark day’s of War returned again.

😮 It is just bloody amazing what change’s took place between 1935 and 1940!!!.

I have worked out nearly all the Aircraft in this Film/Doc on the RAF.

BUT what are the very W.W.1 looking type’s being said to be there great bomber’s of the time.(simply damn old in apperance) .

I think I know what they might have been, but there seem’s to have been quiet a few Mod’s done on them.

Interesting Para drop’s too, just hang on to a strut out on the wing, when the pilot signal’s go, pull your ring on your chute, and the slipstream drag’s you off the plane, but it doe’s look just a bit risky 😮 .

And for anyone who love the old Fury’s 😉 .

Well those display’s those lad’s put on are just awesome!!!!.

I have never seen so plane’s doing it all at once.

Magic Magic Magic stuff , how else can I describe it 🙂 .

Those really were the Golden year’s I guess.

Who else out there in cycer space has seen this GEM  .

Cheer’s all far and wide 😀 , Tally :dev2: Ho! :dev2: Ho! Phil :diablo: .

Various comments made about Vickers Virginia’s serving in the RAF until 1941.
Other types served long periods too eg Avro 504.

However compare that “long life” (20 – 25 years) with some of today’s front-line types B-52, C-130, Jaguar, Nimrod, etc.

So I have the 2 trainer Avro Tutor’s now,

Thank’s on the Horsley Glyn,

That the one I had marked in my book I see, Warplane’s of the world, 1918-1939 by Michael J.H Taylor.

The rad on this one’s a lttle different again.

Quick Hawker Horsley bit’s

On the 20-21 May 1927 a long-distance Horsley, with extra fuel tank’s and stronger axle and tyres, flew 3,419 mile’s from England to the Persian Gulf non stop in 34 hour’s.

And thus gained for the Britain the world long distance record, beating the previous record by about 75 mile’s.

This lasted for much less than a day, When American Chuck Lindbergh flew the spirit of st louis, from New york to Paris, 3,610 mile’s.(from above book)

Flt Lt Carr did have some fun in them.

One even had a JUMO!!!

Going cross eyed(and not from that)

G’ day back again 🙂 ,

Well ok, I have been watching the tape now and then when I can get to the T.V.
Trainer’s
Maybe Tiger Moth or blackburn B-2, and some Cadet like, but shot’s change rapidly to different aircraft shot’s.

Here is the number’s I could pick up on a few of them.
K-3032
K-3222

Virginia Night Bomber’s
500 K on side
Oeal or Deal Castle on front nose of plane
Horse coat of arm’s or emblem underneath this writing.

Second Bomber next to it look’s like it has another Castle name(maybe that scot’s thing where they get tattoo’s :p ) and Horse coat of arm’s as well.

Torpedo Bomber’s.

Seem’s to be quiet a few different shot’s again  .
Maybe Fairey Seal,
But the one with the inline engine and Beard radiator right under the prop has me puzzeled, look’s like a modification after delivery  .
Here a few number’s I got off some of the Carrier plane’s
J 8615
K 3526

(I have also spent some time trying to find the name of the Flat top’s they are using, They have no above Island work’s at all, again various shot different ship’s I think but all flat flat top’s.)

Large Flying boat’s.
I am tossing up between a few, here’ a half shot at it.
Short’s Singapore.
Number I picked up again.
S-1123

As for the portly transport/Troop carrier.
I would say the Vicker’s Victoria as they where in that middle east area during all of that that footage, but there’s not a lot of difference in look’s with the 3 Vicker’s Porker’s
Number I picked up again.
K-2793.

And yes I did see that platform on the wing of the Virginia , in one shot the photographer is sitting on it filming the para drop,(great footage again) so they must have both been hanging on to that strut 😮 .

Here’s the Intercepter Sqd’s Furie’s number’s I picked up if anyone is interested.
K-2076
K-2060
K-2066
K-2079
K-2053
K-2070

Here’s some pick’s I could find on the net, for id purpose’s.

Sounds like a fascinating programme. I’ve got this photograph of a parachutist which has always been a puzzle to me but your statement above sheds some light on it. Note the small platform on the wing for the parachutist to stand on. This picture was taken at Netheravon in 1937 during ‘Film Work’.

The portly transports were probably Vickers Vernons. If someone could send me a copy on VHS or DVD I could probably identify most of them! (PM with address already sent to Stormbird)

Hi Stormbird

I didn’t stay up to watch, but recorded the film too. When I watched it the next day, I was absolutely amazed at the ancient aircraft still serving in 1935. Tried to identify them but apart from the Furies, couldn’t do so. The Virginias had me perplexed and the torpedo bombers – well, are they Sharks, Ripons, what?

I was fascinated too by the wing-drop parachuting, the torpedo drops and many other aspects of the film, but what really surprised me was the total (and I do mean TOTAL) lack of anything remotely modern (ie new for 1935) in the film. The Virginia looked like early to mid 20’s vintage, Furies dated from 30-31, the others all of similar vintage. Incidentally, what were the portly transports showns taking off?

This is definitely a piece of vintage aviation nostalgia worth keeping, and having been shown on the ABC, has the advantage of NO ADS! Also quite a good clear copy. Just wish my knowledge of pre-war aircraft was better. (and my home library isn’t much help either)

Regards

Wombat

Virginia’s

Thank’s anyway Papa 😉 ,

So doe’s anyone one else know about Virginia part/bit’s still around  .

Also Papa,
I have found little mention of the R.A.F Film/Doc on the net other than it was a British Propaganda film of the time, and I think another similiar one was done a few year’s later, If I can find what it’s called I will drop back here to tell you.

Over to you guys and gals in the UK – although my late father probably worked on (and even perhaps flew in) Virginias, I have no idea if there is anything tangible left, in the UK or anywhere else.
