What anniversaries are there in 2012

Well with 2011 nearly at a close is it time to ask what anniversaries we will be celebrating/commemorating in 2012?

I just got my info from the RAF webb site, are you telling them they’re wrong
or should I.:D:D

I would look here, also from the RAF web site:D

http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafmarham/aboutus/2sqnhistorywwi.cfm

2 and 3 formed the same day. Both the first fixed wing squadrons in the world. no2 consider that they were formed first, well thats what they told us when they came over to see BE2 🙂

3-2

I think 2 sqd would argue with you on that one as they consider that they were the first heavier than air sqd being formed earlier the same day. |And they are organising an event in May.

Fifty four years since my first flight and my 70th birthday!!

Didn’t fly until you were 70 ! Left it a bit late, surely ?

Still, being 124, I suppose you were even a bit old for WW1!

I wonder if 3 sqd are planning anything special as they were the first RFC sqd to be equipped with heavier than air machines a hundred years ago on 13 may 1912, a Typhoon with a full make over would be nice:D but don’t hold your breath:rolleyes:

Later this week on March 7th will be the 70th Anniversary of Operation Spotter the first 15 Spitfires to fly out to Malta via HMS Eagle. These were the first Spitfires to be based outside the UK. 6 of the pilots would be killed on Malta five are buried there, the other was lost in the sea and is remembered on the Malta Memorial in Valletta.

Not aviation related but….

200 years since Napoleon tried to invade Russia
200 years since Prime Minister Spencer Perceval was assassinated
100 years since the Titanic sank

This is my logbook entry for 15th Dec 1955. Marks my first visit to Duxford, I told my pilot to turn on to 270 and the clag should clear as we got inland, soon enough found Duxford.

“P. I.’s Mutual 2000 Diverted to Duxford. Weather closed in, 19 aircraft up, and total chaos in ATC. We were left to our own devices. “

Anther important one here in NZ, and it should be noted in the UK too, is the 75th Anniversary of the Royal New Zealand Air Force becoming a seperate service, on 1 April 1937.
