One that I can recommend from limited personal experience (I grabbed a flying hour or three during a holiday) is Del Monte Flight School at Monterey airport about an hour South of San Francisco.

It’s an authorised Cessna flight school, which means nearly new aeroplanes. It’s friendly and has excellent instructors, many ex-US Navy. Great flying down the coast and Monterey’s a pretty cool place post-flight too!

The only downsides are, like most West Coast schools and unlike Florida, the school is FAA only, with no JAR or CAA approvals, which could be tricky if you’re wanting to log time for a British PPL. Also in July, watch ou for the notorious Bay Area fogs!

Don’t forget to check the latest homeland security rules on registering foreign pilots too.

Happy landings!

thanks for the suggestions, unfortunately I am financially limited to Southern Cal. 🙁

Hi, this doesn’t help but will assist in your research. Have you looked at the listings on landings.com ?
