I’m ashamed to say i don’t have anything on spits. Can anyone recommend some good books – preferably on the more technical aspects of the aircraft and different marks.
Cheers

If you can lay your hands on a copy, “Spitfire – The Story Of A Famous Fighter” by the late Bruce Robertson ain’t too bad a choice either. 🙂
Cheers
Paul
It sometimes appears on eBay – that’s where I got mine, albeit with a tatty cover!

Daz has already listed it, but ‘The Spitfire Story’ by Alfred Price I found to be a very comrehensive book on the evolution of the Spitfire. The author interviewed many people who were involved in development of the aircraft. Jeffrey Quill in the foreword calls it ‘…a valuable historical work…’ and Dr Gordon Mitchell in the Preface remarks, ‘All who wish to learn more of the little fighter….must not fail to read The Spitfire Story …’

That is quite a collection Daz!
Thanks a lot for the guidance guys – I will try to pick a few of those up – maybe i’ll see them at shoreham 😀
Have a good weekend all & cheers for the help.
That’s not all of them 😉
Probably miniscule compared to others, though!

The two Datafile ones have lots of close-up photos of some aspects of the various marks – and a good few models built by the author with tips on building and finishing various versions. They also have various scale drawings etc.
I just listed the books I have – better to list them all than to try and differentiate! 😉
(I forgot “Story of a famous fighter” as I couldn’t see the title too clearly from here! )

I would add Spitfire International, published by Air Britain. Whilst not particularly technical it does give an insight into the various airforces that operated her with histories of the aircraft service.

Spitfire – The History
The Spitfire Story – Alfred Price
Spitfire at War 1,2 and 3 – Alfred Price. You’re more likely to find the first two in one
volume: Spitfire – A Complete Fighting History
Spitfire in Combat – Alfred Price
Spitfire – A Documentary History – Alfred Price
Spitfire – Flying Legend – John Dibbs and Tony Holmes.
2nd TAF Spitfire – Hugh Smallwood
Spitfire in Blue – Hugh Smallwood
Spitfire – Squadron/Signal publication
Modeller’s Datafile 3 – Supermarine Spitfire part 1 – Merlin-powered
Modeller’s Datafile 5 – Supermarine Spitfire part 2 – Griffon-powered
That’s just the ones on my shelf – Mark12 must have about four or five times that figure to hand! 😀
