What are these?

Usually I can identify a mainstream WW2 type with my eyes shut, but these have got me a bit stumped. This picture has appeared on a local history forum and show planes being towed through Liverpool. Probably American en route to Burtonwood, and with detatchable or folded wings, which suggests a naval type.
But beyond that I’m scratching my head a bit. Any thoughts? There’s a little voice saying Hellcat in my ear, but I’m not 100pc convinced.
