dark light

What are these parts from.

I dug these bits up in 1969 and wonder what they are off.
The small intake fairing was unused still wrapped on it is the number PP8998FE (BMB) it is some 4 inch top to bottom the front is about 2 inch deep.
The panel with two holes i have a number of with Oxygen painted on it.
The circular one appears to be part of an exhaust about 9 inch dia
I have a cowling somewhere with FBFW stamped on it.
Any ideas.

I’m sure you are right about the firewall Bruce. They are some interesting parts you have found Graham – it would be great to see pics of any other items you managed to save, if you manage to dig them out. I sent you a PM by the way.

Thanks for the replies all these parts came from RAF Lichfield off the scrapping area. These were lying in the hedges and all over the field there are a lot more bits when i can find them which include cowlings and large panels and many more parts undamaged. The farmer gave me these as they were damaging his farm machinery. There were also Lancaster engine mounts B17 bomb doors and wellington cockpit framing and much more including bomb aimers windows , sadly these were buried by the farmer in an old pond near the site. I believe many Typhoons were scrapped here as there was a field full at the end of the war and also many 1000s of other aircraft were scrapped here. I have been told by people who worked here that alot were stripped by Marshalls especially engines for salvage. Alot of aircraft bits were taken to local disused mines and quarries and dumped , i presume these were the rubber and tyres and internal fittings and other items. Also a rumour here is that a Mosquito crashed in the late 1950’s at an airshow when the pilot flew past the crowd on one engine and feathered the wrong prop and crahed on the airfield ?

Hi Varsity – I checked the part number – your fuel panel is from a Whitley. Any chance you would do a deal to let it go? Your firewall remains could also be Whitley but i’d need to take a closer look.

Lots of Mosquito parts there – anything with 98 in the part number is going to be Mossie.

The firewall is Mosquito, so too the two panels – one is a fuel filler access, one is the 24v supply access.

I reckon the gun port is Mosquito; they were shorter than the Vampire/Venom ones.

Next panel stamped N in a circle and EC 238A
Front gun port from Mosquito

Hi,

The part marked EC 238A in de Havilland part numbering means Engine Cowling. If ther is a number before the EC, this will indicate the type. 3 = hornet, 4 = Dove, 13 = vampire T11, 15 = Venom, etc.

Also, referring to the front gun port. Are there any numbers on this? Is it definitely dehavilland? The same style of tube was used on the vampire/venom/hornet/mosquito, etc.

Where abouts did you find these, as it could indicate the type also?

There is a British flame detector fixed to the last panel. The very last picture has the close up, so presumeably a firewall as you say.

…the exhaust section is stamped FBFW 108

FBFW 108 is an inspector’s stamp (FBFW = Fisher Body, Flint West). There should also be a part number on it somewhere.

Stainless panel 6 inch across marked GK32G1101

GK32 = Ford-built B-24 item, Gxxxx suffix indicates fuel system component.

Exhaust panel 8 inch across marked 1-16607-6

B-17 exhaust ball joint assembly component I believe, 1-16604 through 1-16606 certainly are.

All the best,
PB

Second pic, post #11 – are the internal barrel blocks/spider supports from a 23E50 propeller hub used on loads of aircraft types (including B24’s).

The third and fourth pics, post #11, are radial engine baffles, type unknown.

The fifth pic, post #11, is a turbocharger cooling duct. Easily seen on turbochargers on P-38’s and B-24’s, it sits on the outside of the unit.

The “stainless panel” in post #12 is a fuel filler neck outside face for the cap to lock into – type unknown.

The access panels may tell us more if you can find a part number.

The third image, of the Y-shaped casting looks like a Cheetah engine pushrod sleeve support. Mounted on the crank case of all marks of the Cheetah. Other Armstrong Siddeley engines may have had the same part though I’m not sure without doing some research, so it’s possible it could be from Lynx or Jaguar engine – both types of engine used by the RAF for many years pre- and early-WW2.

the last three in your first post look like the Hobson compressor intake that sits on top of the Merlin. but i cannot work out its size from images. also something similar on port side just fwd of wing root on the Hurricane.

The 4th is a connector
The fifth is a Boeing fuel filler cap i presume B17.
