What are we missing?

Folks-

Let’s give this some serious thought…what major WWII aircraft types are we missing out there? I’m talking about planes that there are NO FLYING examples of right now that should be….and then we can also add in those types that there are desperately low numbers of (like under 5)….I’m not talking museum examples here, I’m talking flying planes/restorations to flying…maybe we can shed some light on what we have to look forward to in the not too distant future and have a few nice surprises…

My list:

None flying-
DeHavilland Mosquito
Bristol Beaufighter
Focke Wulf FW 190
Curtiss P-36
PB4Y Privateer
Vought Kingfisher
Hawker Typhoon/Tempest
JU-87 Stuka
Messerschmitt 110
Numerous Japanese types

and my ‘critical list’, less than 5 of them flying:

P-38 Lightning (may be more than 5)
B-29
Lancaster
F2G Corsair
Messerschmitt BF 109
Consolidated B-24
Mitsubishi Zero
Curtiss Helldiver
Fairey Firefly
Fairey Swordfish

Obviously, I have’nt thought of everything, that’s your guy’s job, to fill in the blanks. I will offer some encouraging news…the Lone Star Hawker Hurricane (not on either list) is set to start engine runs this spring/summer here in Colorado, and there is an A6M3 Zero also in Fort Collins, CO that will be up and around for the Evergreen Museum in a few years.

Interested to see what you all can add.

Oi!

Lets not forget the Boulton Paul Overstrand and the Gloster Gnatsnapper. 🙂

I’d bet there are no Me-163s flying anymore 😀

As for aircraft with less than 5 flying examples, I can only think of one flying Me-262.

It is easy to construct this list, mossie is probably the top of the heap for me, however, I agree with a couple of the other posts about the B26. That was a great looking aircraft and there were a good deal of em over here, and a few of their airfields are still active, I have flown to a couple. Seems poorly represented to me.

I see where you’re coming from as regards this list, so, adding to the first list, starting with an example that up until this summer would have been in the second list…..

Blenheim
F-82 twin Mustang (WW2?)
Probably several Russian types, notably La-11
Fiat CR.42
P-61

As for list B,

Gloster Gladiator
Westland Lysander
P-39
P-63
B-26
La-9
Dauntless..?

Must be more viable projects out there we have’nt thought of yet…

BRITISH list

WELLINGTON !
Stirling
Walrus
Defiant
Fulmar
Roc
Skua
Horsa
Hotspur
Lincoln
Heyford
Seafox
Stranraer
Brigand

US in British service

Baltimore
Hudson (in UK)

I would like to see a lot more axis aircraft restored. It pains me to think of all the potential projects rotting away or being scrapped in the pacific.

Here is an interesting link I found on the pacific wrecks forum about a P63 recovery in the Kurile islands.

Westland Whirlwind
Handley Page Hampden
Short Sunderland
Vickers Wellington

Heinkel 111 ( a proper one with the correct engines)
Dornier Do335
Heinkel He 162 Salamander.
He100/112 ( the aircraft that was in the fly off competition with the Bf109 but lost even though it was apparrently the better machine)
Brewster Buffalo

Any advance on that little collection, it’s not hard, even I didn’t have to think very hard about it.
