What brought you 'here'?

I’m curious…. I joined the Key Pubs. Fora 2 years ago due to my hunt for Military Aerobatic Team information, which proved to be quite fruitful. I came here as an avid reader of Air Forces Monthly and joined via the ‘Modern Military Aviation’ thread.

From a personal point of view, it didn’t take long (to be blunt, it was quite quickly), I found far more fulfilling, intelligent input, debate and content in the ‘Historic Aviation’ thread. Strangely, I’ve noticed a number of Historic thread visitors refer to it as the ‘Flypast’ forum – yes I am fully aware of Flypast Magazine as a Key Publishing product.

So, what I’m asking is… which ‘portal’ or general interest brought you here (and if not via the magazines, how did you find it), and what was your original interest in joining?

James

Ahhh….

i joined 10 years ago…literally. 1998! I was what …. 13. And i am 23 now.

My dad had got me a copy of AW… Gulf Air i think on the cover. I just visited the website and joined. At that time you did not need to register and anyone could post.

The last member from that time to post here except me was Rabie i think from the Military forums. A guy used to post here called KenW or something like that. The man was a walking aviation encyclopedia.

I dont think anyone else is still posting here from that time. Some old members though are/were Comet, GarryB, SOC as well.

Everyone else who currently posts is quite new.

I feel like a fossil now.

I admit to being one of the veterans of the old “Airliner World” forum. I joined that in 2000 after reading about it in “Airliner World”, I was just starting my second year at university at the time. I think my first ever topic was about my first flights on Sabena, which had been a couple of months before I joined the forum.

Each of the fora used to be named after their respective Key Publishing magazines, so the Historic was named ‘The Flypast Forum’, the Commercial ‘The Airliner World’ forum etc etc…

For whatever reason (and those of us who have been here long enough have our theories) the names were changed and the only connection with the magazines was the ‘Key Publishing’ logo and ownership.

You may be correct in your assertion that Historic’ contains the more mature debate, and that I would imagine is probably down to the age demographic of those who participate. My main interest is in commercial aviation and the ‘quality’ of conversation has been variable over the years but still interesting.

As for the general discussion forum, I once heard it described as a place where members partaking of more serious discussion elsewhere would come to ‘let off steam’ and for a while it was ‘silly season’ in there most of the time. If you think it’s bad now, you ain’t seen nothing.

Oh and how did I get here…? Probably around the early 2000’s when I accidentally rediscovered my childhood love of commercial aviation by finding a discarded copy of Airliner World on a Glasgow bound train shortly after departing Liverpool’s Lime Street station…

I just read about it on one of Key Publishing’s magazines, and being thoroughly fed up with the vile teenagers who form the bulk of the strategyworld forum patronage I moved here.
