What can´t you stand about your country?

We all love our countries. But I am sure you are impartial enough to tell me what you dislike about your countries. Please…I want all of you to answer my post, even the most radically patriotic ones. Ten things please. Here it goes what I hate about Spain.
1)Bullfighting and flamenco.
2)Caotic traffic and anarquist driving behaviour
3)Rudeness
4)Burocracy and inefiency in many sectors.
5)Opening times (everything closes from 2 to 5) and eating times (lunch at three and dinner at ten).
6)Paralysis in summer time
7)Politicians
8)Urbanism in cities and countryside.
9)Tea at coffee shops….please give me a good Whittard tea
10)How the people shout in public places and conversations.

RE: A few things – but one thing in particular..

Thats f*~#ked up!

I will have a rant now

BT are being overslow on enabling exchanges for ADSL which I would quite like. This whole broadband thing has been hyped up and we are all waiting for it to happen. But… nothing has, oh now hang on something did happen. They spent 30 million on a poxy advert which rubs my nose in it every evening that I am part of the 99% of the country that wont get it for years!!!

RE: A few things – but one thing in particular..

OK get this… “RANT ALERT”…

Heard on the news over the weekend that one county’s police force was making full use of its Speeding Cameras and they had issued over the past few months thousands of tickets… no real surprise there except that among these tickets, several thousand of them where being issued to the Ambulance service who had been caught speeding…. WTF!!!!

Taking it into perspective as far as i can recall if the blue lights were on they said they weren’t issuing tickets but even so, the Ambulance is an emergency service and in my view, like the police, they should be exempt from speed restrictions in emergency vehicles.

Think of all the money being wasted on the adminstration of issuing these tickets… IT’S MADNESS!!!!!!!!

Who gives a S**T if an Ambulance is speeding, or a Police car, or Fire engine, or MD or any emergency service vehicle. All of the drivers, as far as i’m aware have advanced driver training so i’m sure they are prefectly safe to drive at speed so whats the problem.

This is a small example of what irritates me about this country, the amount of time, money and effort being wasted in the UK over things that seem utterly pointless and stupid.

OK i’m back to normal now 😀

New Zealand:

Political Correctness run amok

Governments that sell their souls for a bit of trade (though there wouldn’t be many politicians who hadn’t already sold them to get into parliament in the first place)

and last but not least – JAFA’s :9

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-10-02 AT 02:53 PM (GMT)]What i don’t like about the Netherlands? Well, take more or less the opposite of what Shorty says and that’s basically my view… (no offence Shorty!).

What i don’t like about the Netherlands:

[li]A general holier-than-thou attitude (I know, St. Arthur is guilty of that one too 😉 ).
[li]An epidemic not-in-my-backyard mentality
[li]Shortsightedness
[li]Intolerance (as a society the Netherlands are very tolerant, but on an individual level people are definately not)
[li]Lack of straightforwardness. People usually act very friendly, but behind your back…
[li]Lack of self-criticism. This one is dedicated to all those who voted LPF }> }> }> That party is about as stable as the late Pim Fortuyn’s views 😀
[li]Ignorance and twisting truths as fact. Apologies if you feel offended Shorty, but you gave a nice example of this on the Dutch green party Groen Links: they are not the former communist, they emerged as a union from three older left-wing parties, one of which was about half of the then existing Communist Party of the Netherlands.
[li]The general small-town grocer’s mentality. Oh no, that is what made this country big. Big? Euhhh….

A few things – but one thing in particular..

Australia: The bloody pathetic dabble that is Defence procurement!!! And not to mention the sheer fear of defence budget increases, even though the need is SO obvious – its not funny! On top of that, a REAL ADF (Australian Defence Force) mission review we NEED after the 9/11 attacks, the 2000 White paper needs to be revamped – already!

I suppose on a postive note, we now have ASPI – the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. 🙂

Regards, Glenn.

RE: What can´t you stand about your country?

The Thing I hate about my country is that whe are TO tolerant. We exept everything, The last thing is that there are special houses for old moslim people who are not longer working( ? ), pension. Those houses have their toilet especialy to the west, not pointing your ass to the east. Hide the kitchen in such way that the women is inpossible to see for the male guests.
Whe have gone mad!!!!

The goofing arounf with the police!! Whe got Police that does’nt act when there is a riot! they are affraid to get punished if they hit sommebody and they all wants to talk to offenders instead off beating the sh*t out off them.

And ofcourse I hate the tree hugging and talking politicians.(groen-links) they are the former Commies.

And the treasury department!!
People who are not working for their money and still are complaining that they have to little money.

I’m getting frustrated!

Viper

Viper, how do the Norwegians look at a possible membership in the European Union? I think most will dislike it, because they’ll have to pay more than they’ll get back. But on the other hand, it will also offer economical and political advantages. It’s strange to see how isolated those non-EU countries are in western-Europe (Norway and Switzerland).

RE: What can´t you stand about your country?

I have to explain my rejection to Flamenco. I find it OK as people expression of an identity, culturaly brilliant…and so on and I don´t dislike it. But it doesn´t have anything to do with most of Spanish regions. It´s only from Andalucia. So what upsets me most is that all Spain is related to Flamenco outside, and that this music is put as “the Spanish music”, being other “Spanish music” more. Just a question of internal and regional quarrel.

RE: for Keltic

sqausher- I agree with you that flemenco is a fantastic music. It has alot of simularitys with jazz in that it is a freeform lamenting music of a poor minority group, being mixture of Classical european music with middle eastern modes and harmonys. Like jazz, people think its just artsy music to just be performed, not really for listening too on its own. People dont see that subconciously weve assimulated both jazz and flamenco as part of the mainstream music which has given a new range of freedom on how music is formed. People are numbed to jazz and flamencos influence because its so deeply ingrained as a normal part of music. Famous spanish pop singer Alejandro Sanz has a flamenco singing background and uses the flemenco style to great affect in songs like “amiga mia”.

RE: What can´t you stand about your country?

1. Lack of chauvenism. Belgium scores 4th in the countries with best living standards, but still, people find nagging and badmouthing necessairy.
2. Bureaucracy: with 8 gov’ts it’s becoming a little bit confusing.
3. Political correctness
4. The media, who contributes to the nagging and badmouthing.
5. The Agusta A-109s 😀
6. the Vlaams Blok
7. the incompetent tree-hugger party (Agalev + Ecolo)
8. thousands of Dutch who live here to avoid taxes and buy so much ground the local population can’t afford a newly build house anymore.
9. the Royal family
10. the communautary, regional, cultural and economical quarrels between the North and the South, initiated by indiviuals like Filip de Winter and José happart

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-09-02 AT 07:48 PM (GMT)]Cyprus

1. Bloody Turks
2. Too much village culture in peoples psyches
3. In danger of over crowding the island with too many Hotels!
4. Not global enough
5. Stubbornness in any small insignificant matter!
6. Only see Japanese Cars on the roads
7. Politics seem to be dominated by 60-80 year old politicians.
8. Constant visa controls at airports (greeks whose parents
live abroad have to do national service).
9. Cypriots eat and drink too much resulting in beer bellies!!!
10.Not much urgency in Cypriots getting on a plane and jetting off
the island.

RE: What can´t you stand about your country?

I am just starting to perceive what I had expected. Problems are global, and human beings are really alike at least as far as daily problems are concerned. It doesn´t matter what nationality we have, we suffer from the same set of incoveniences.

RE: What can´t you stand about your country?

The biggie in the UK is the total absence of a service culture.

I got a new car today, but I want to run both my new and old car together for a month or so. So I called the insurance company and basically, I was told to call another number. So I did, then they said….call another number. So I did, then they said…you can’t have 2 cars on your policy, you need to get a second policy. But we can’t sell you two policies. Go to see a broker.

I just uttered “fine” and hung up. Aaargh!!

RE: What can´t you stand about your country?

Brazil

1. Politians (this includes corruption)
2. Social differences (too many poor people for a country which has the 9th biggest world economy)
3. Urban violence (although I dont live in a city like Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, some Brazilians are getting much like Colombia).
4. I hate the summer!!! It is too hot here in summer. Thanx God it´s winter now.
5. Burocracy
6. Taxes are really high. One of the biggest in the whole world.
7. Our sunday´s tv programs. Man, it´s impossible that there is any worse anywhere. Thanx God (again) I have cable.
8. Samba, axe and forro. Almost all of our national music styles sux.

There must be much other things that I cant remember right now.
P.S.: I´d like to live in Australia.

RE: What can´t you stand about your country?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-09-02 AT 07:53 AM (GMT)]France has some common point with other EU countries.

1) Bad drivers : a driving licenses is a license to kill in this counrty. If one compares France and UK , UK has roughly 4000 causualties a year due to traffic accident , France 8000 !!!
There is no enforcement and no punishment even if this is moving a bit.

2) Everone does what he wants no matter if it can bother somebody else. We are the champions of no-enforced rules and laws.

2) Bureaucray !!! A nightmare.

3) Rudeness

4) Poor foreign languages skills

5) No service ethic too !!

6) FAilure in business : hard to get over it!!!

And many other . Just let’s post an other post such as “What I like in my country!!”
