What did you do on your 21st birthday

Having to make reference to my logbooks, I hit on this page for June 1953. My 21st birthday occurred on 18th June 1953, the last three entries on the page refer. You can see I had an interesting month, which continues for another 6 entries.

For those unfamiliar with some terminology
P.I. s were Practice Interceptions
Whitecat was the callsign of G(round) (Control) I(Interception), the ground radar which led us to our targets.
Rats were dummy low level attacks.

Also we did a flypast round a few stations in the Canal Zone for the Queens Coronation

I got drunk in “The Comedy” just off Leicester Square and stuck in a revolving door of an office building in Pall Mall East…..

I think you had more fun (and less of a hang over) than me !

I got plastered with some mates in a club in Sunderland and fell off the balcony onto the stage where Hylda Baker was in full flow with “Cynthia”. Needless to say we were all ejected ( not Hylda and Cynthia ) and I remember little of it except the severe bruising!

I was in the Isle of Man at the TT race’s and had to much pop!
When we had our museum at Bletchley Park I met a B24 pilot who was shot down over Germany on his 21st birthday.

Had my first introduction to a Lancaster bomber little did I know it would eat up the next 16 years but I wouldn’t have missed it for the world! Met some absolutely fascinating people including many veterans.

Haven’t decided yet. I’ll be able to say for sure in about a year’s time…when I actually get to it!

Went to Nostell Priory to fetch the Skeeter helicopter (XL764) that I’d purchased for loan to NAM – by coincidence it was their 21st exhibit!! 😀

Subsequently sold on, but still on loan at NAM.

Managed to get back to Winthorpe in time for last orders at the Lord Nelson pub and I drank my pint sat in the cockpit whilst it was still loaded on the trailer!

Went to the pub, drank some beer, ate some Chinese.
