What do we want in 2002

What are peoples hopes and expectations regarding flying displays this coming year.I will be very happy if the following make appearances this season.

I am looking forward to the DH88 Racer gracing the Old Warden Skies again at last.
I hope that the RNHF are able to display the Fairey Firefly after its long absence, and maybe the Sea Hawk.( I am also longing for someone to get that Gannet up and running!!)

It would be great to see a Connie back in the UK for a couple of displays as promised.
Catalina(s) back on the display routine at Duxford of course.
More of Foxy Lady would be nice.
Pink Lady coming back over for Legends (or more !) would be fantastic.
FIFI doing a UK tour !!!!!, sorry slipped into fantasy land for a second.
BUT, the event of the year has to be the mighty XH558 in all her considerable glory thundering upwards at last.
On that subject, every man and his uncle is going to want to see the moment that the mighty delta’s rubber loses contact with the tarmac. What will they do at Bruntingthorpe when the day finally comes, keep it under wraps or open it to the public?. Obviously there will have to be a series of check flights.

Roll on the 2002 display season.

Phil.

Oh dear!

Is it me? I really can’t get that excited about the Vulcan. Perhaps it’s because I saw them so often in the past, maybe it’s just because I’m a WW2 freak rather than a fan of any of the more modern iron.

Still, I wish the project well, and if I do stumble across it at a show in 2002 there’ll still be a big grin on my face.

The plan is to make the first flight private although I would think that roads in the Brunty area would be choked. Then there would be a public day for people to watch.

Thanks David,
I agree, lets stick to realistic and sypathetic displays.
Do away with the Balbo’s and the tenuous scenarios.
Show aircraft as they were intended not circus items.
I’m not against a number of aircraft of the same type, or indeed contempary aircraft being flown together, but massed formations of anything thats available to fly on the day being put together does nothing for me.
I would sooner see 2 or 3 minutes longer on individual displays showing aircraft performing sensibly in all of their glory than 25-30 dots passing over.
I just have this horrible feeling that one day something will go wrong in one of those balbo’s and it will toll the end for historic flying.

Philo – wise sentiments – I was told many years ago by an experienced pilot that it’s ‘not the ground that moves up – it’s the aircraft that goes down’ – he steers away from low level aerobatics and I think sensibly. If you want to see that leave it to the Extra’s.
This type of flying wasn’t a feature of combat – I think we need to try and return to displays like the Great Warbirds at West Malling – low level attacks but aerobatics kept to a minimum.

Ant,
I could not agree more, i was not trying to trivialise the importance of historic flying ,suggest that safety should be compromised in any way or erase last years tragic accidents from memory.I know that we all want to see history well represented and know that we all agree that it should only be done within the confines of the sensible safety restrictions. But I also think that we are all sensible enough to realise that there is an element of danger attached to it.
God forbid that the horrors of last years accidents be repeated, but the risk will always exist.
You can compare the statistics with motor racing or any other ‘non-essential’ activity and make them what you want, but this will not persuade those who see airshows as an ‘unecessary waste of time’ to change their view.
Lets face it, the next time that there is an airshow accident, and lets not kid ourselves into believing that there won’t ever be another,we all know that the press will dig up an array of previous incidents, and we know that they will use terminology like ‘WWII crock’ or ‘Old banger’ and ‘Put in the air after 60 years by enthusiast’ or ‘weekend pilot’ etc.
I am afraid that there is nothing we can do about this, we have to hope and pray that all goes well.
People complain about bodies such as the CAA, i just wonder where we would be had they not existed.
Right, soapbox away for tonight !!

The Shuttleworth Collection are holding a naval air show on june 2nd, I would love to see a formation Sea hurricane, TFC corsair and wildcat and RNHF sea fury. Also looking forward to seeing Paul Morgans corsair which is to be operated on behalf of the Morgan family by ARCO at duxford in 2002.

RE: What do we want in 2002

What i want for 2002 is something that I’m sure all will agree with-a SAFE 2002.No crashes,no prangs,no fatalities.
I remember at the beginning of last season we were saying what we would most like to see etc etc,and it never crossed our minds how terrible the year could be,both with regard to historic machines and aviation in general.Fingers crossed that this type of lightning won’t strike twice. We could go on forever about what we would like to see, but we give less consideration to what we want to continue seeing. We have to remember that if Joe Public and the general media had thier way,we would lose every flying machine that was more than 10 or 20 years old.We need a good year!
Here’s to a happy and safe new display season!

On the RNHF front I think the Firefly is now 99% complete and awaits ground runs then test flights. The Sea Hawk repair is done but still awaits reassembly.

Incidentially their Sea Fury’s Centaurus engine has begun its rebuild programme.

Hope this helps.
