what does Cricket mean ?

Where does the phrase ‘cricket’ come from ? does it come from watching the supporters all holding their necks in agony while watching the ball first being thrown at some bloke who then tries to whack it of site the way it just came with a flat stick?. I mean…Football…a ball game where you use your foot…makes sense, swimming where you swim, horse racing where you race horses (normaly on the horses back….just in case someone takes this the wrong way and tries to actually race against a horse !) but’Cricket’its got me ‘Stumped’ ?

Over to you ….(pun intended)

Cheers

RE: what does Cricket mean ?

Well the question was when was English last on top? Even I wish English cricket well- having them plastered by the aussies even at home – without a fight has become a drag.
But dont think England have that large a pool of home grown talent- maybe they should tap more of the home grown Asian talent- The english are something like – we invented the game so we know best something like India in hockey. But the world has left them far behind. They are just not innovative enough nor are they willing to let in new ideas on a large enough scale.

RE: what does Cricket mean ?

I have it!

From the Collins English Dictionary:

“(…C16 from Old French cricquet, goal post, wicket, of uncertain origin)”

So there you are chaps, even the experts are not absolutely certain where the name comes from!

What a sportsman, I’m sure we’ll find greatness again, but our County cricket is going the same way as our league soccer i.e. to many foreign players. Which means our up and coming youngsters dont get the chance they deserve.

RE: what does Cricket mean ?

Yes wombat, I meant footy – real sport!

Climate has a lot to do with it – the Aussies are usually good at most sports, at least partly because of the climate. Kids at school enjoy playing sport in the sun, but in the cold wet mud they feign injuries (or was that just me?!)

Also, I remember playing cricket at school. We were never taught how to play, what the rules were or any technique. We were male – we were supposed to know this sort of stuff. With rugger and footy, the sport is popular and we DID know it all. But not so with cricket.

Where does the word originate? No idea!!

RE: what does Cricket mean ?

Gary,

it comes from an undulation of the tongue whilst opening and closing the mouth. For England, test cricket means having two days off in every match.

“We need to play normal nations…”

What does that make the Aussies – abnormal or just extra-ordinary?

Xanadu

“English cricket is dead…”

I sure hope you’re wrong. England is the traditional home of cricket. It would be tragic for this sport if England never again finds its way to the top. I can’t imagine that this will not happen. The British population is over three times that of Australia. Surely with such a pool to draw from, England can eventually find the players to compile a strong and successful team.

These things go in cycles. During the 70’s, the Windies were all-conquering, now they are well down the list of the world cricket ratings. Australia has been at the top before, but during the early 70’s, we got flogged, frequently. Now we’re back on top. Our turn to fall will come again, just as surely as England’s turn to assume greatness will.

Don’t lose faith, England fans. I won’t.

RE: what does Cricket mean ?

Guys,

I love cricket, and have always considered that the only real “Test Cricket” is that played between Australia and England.

I too, wish that the English team was stronger and could make a real contest of a Test series. I derive no pleasure from the manner in which the Australians are winning at present and yearn for those days when the English were “the enemy” and wins came at a high price, fought out over five days, with the result in the balance until the final session on day five. The time must come when this is again the case and I look forward to the English team belting our blokes around the paddock.

Mongu – please pardon my ignorance, but are you referring to football when you talk about “real sport”? If you are, then you’re right – our efforts at “soccer” are pretty half-hearted. That’s possibly why we do better at the two Rugby codes.

Regards

Wombat

National pride will be restored in London next year when the Aussies are beaten at a proper sport!

No idea where the word originates though. Interesting point! It must be one of those foregein words which got anglicised.

RE: what does Cricket mean ?

Wombat!!! I knew if us poms brought up that swear word “cricket” you’d be there before long gloating.

May I apologise on behalf of all English cricket fans, next time we’ll send out a team who know how to play, so , until then, have fun.
