Peruvian cruiser Almirante Grau (CLM-81)
By: koxinga - 11th July 2004 at 04:56
the Otomat missile launchers (8) were added in 1992 and is now a light
I thought they were Exocets? Only the Grau was upgraded with the SSM. That is why i tot the Aguire is prime candidate for decom. They are the last of the active war cruisers. 🙂

Mate what about the FRAM’s (Gearings and Carpenters and Sumners) and of course the big Iowas?
Of course, don’t want to forget the Iowas and the Gearings, but the Albany and Grau are both cruisers, hence the thought came to mind. And no offense to the Peruvian navy, but I find the Grau to be like the Albany- quite ugly. 🙂 The slight refit just makes them more so.

Kind of reminds me of the old USS Albany with the really tall smoke stacks, and mix of WWII and modern missiles.

ja. is correct, also koxinga, its ex royal nederlands “de zeven provincien”.
captured by the germans in 1940 while still in construction, they’ve (the germans) finished the job.
aquired by the Peruvian navy from holland in March 1973 and named BAP (Buque Armada Peruana) Almirante Grau.
the Otomat missile launchers (8) were added in 1992 and is now a light missile cruiser, its sister ship, BAP.Aguirre was decomisioned in march 19 1999, the diference being Aguirre was an helicopter carrier cruiser.
neither i havent heard about her for a while

Would the Grau be retired soon? Old cruisers like these tend to be manpower intensive.
According to my two latest sources she is still active, although to what degree I am not sure.

What are you talking about? Which ship?
The Eendracht-class cruisers as Jonesy pointed out. I called the the De Ruyter class because i did not know the class name of the ship. Janes Warship Recongition had said quite clearly there were ex-Royal Netherlands cruisers.

Sorry Glenn et al the ‘current’ Almirante Grau isn’t the Mod. Fiji-Class you’ve illustrated. That vessel carried the name prior to the introduction of the two former Dutch cruisers of the Eendracht-class in 1973.

Right you are Jonesy and others! Looking at the picture CLOSELY this time, and the difference in the gun turrets is obvious. Blimey, thats what you get for jumping the gun…
😮

As i recalled from reading Janes warship reconigition guide a few years back (lost the damm book!), she is a ex-Royal Netherlands Navy’s De Ruyter class cruiser.

The ship was bought from the Dutch which in it’s service was “HMNS De Zeven Provincien- The Seven Provences)
8x 6″ (152mm) guns, 8x Otomat SSM’s
Sistership is the Aguirre which lost it’s aft to guns in order to put a Seaking in a hanger. Both ships were completed in 1953 and are over due for replacement, they still operate with boilers but one has not put to sea in the last 15 years due to four boilers exploding (can’t remember which one).

is “Admiralty R Class” another name for it ? india had 3 ships of this type and atleast one saw action in 1961 liberation of Goa.
The Modified FIJI class was also known as the ‘Colony’ class. I think you may be referring to another class.

Modified FIJI-class.

Apparently India bought one of these ex-RN cruisers as well and it served until it was scrapped in 1986.
