Name: WYCHERLEY, ROY
Initials: R
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Aircraftman 1st Class
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Age: 22
Date of Death: 11/06/1940
Service No: 959146
Hello, I’m trying to find out what happened to the above person. He died while serving at RAF Driffield (11th June 1940). I understand that there was a raid from Driffield that night (Whitley bombers), but considering the above person’s rank, I doubt if he was aircrew.
I gave my last copy of Strong Foundations (history of RAF Driffield) away, so can’t look up what happened on that date. The airfield was heavily bombed on August 15th 1940, but I am aware that the site was attacked on other occasions, but without (?) loss of life. Remember reading about a ground crew member who walked into the propeller of an aircraft in an ORB held at Kew, but my research notes were lent to another researcher and never returned.
Can anyone help find out what happened to Roy Wycherley?, as a relative contacted me wanting to know more about former RAF Driffield and his uncle. I have advised him to wrote to RAF Cranwell (RAF Service Records).
Best Wishes
Phil Rhodes

Why not get his Death Certificate – that should record the cause of death.

Wycherley can’t be that common a name. So I thought about family connections to Broughton and Wrexham. Lo and behold, a quick Google reveals a business in that name in Wrexham. Details are:
Wycherley Limousines and Taxis,
16, St. Georges Crescent,
Wrexham,
LL13 8DB.
Tel: 01978 355568.
Got to be worth a phone call Phillip. The details are from Thomson Local.

Well done for finding that Paul, I wasn’t able to locate it despite several search attempts as I was sure it would be there! The thread is a couple of years old though so new info may have filled the gap/new members on the forum etc so it’s still worth asking again.

Trouble is Wycherley does not come up on Flight Global or Times so we do not know if he Died on Active Service, or was Killed on Active Service…

You could try asking over on RAF Commands forum http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=1
There is a chap, Henk Welting, on there compiling data on all RAF losses so far unaccountable so he might have it in his data base.

Phillip.
No losses of aircraft operating from Driffield that night. I would suspect illness or accident to be the cause of death. Driffield’s ORB may provide the answer.
Sorry can’t be of more help.

I am reading “The Reich Intruders” by Martin W. Bowman ISBN 1-84415-333-9 Which gives some accounts of Aircrew of Blenheims in 1940 through the phony war to the fall of France where the crew member wop/gunner was nearly always an aircraftsman , multiply that by the horrendous Aircraft losses incurred and you might have some Idea of the losses involved , a brave and heroic a group of servicemen as one could wish for .
