It seems like every day a bomb or two goes off. A few people killed here, a few people killed there.
Occasionally an allied soldier dies. In a few years time forces will be pulled out and then what?
Something has to be done globally, militarily, politically to solve this once and for all.
I fear we have just delayed a more major conflict or the middle east is destined to be at war internally for many, many more years.
Whatever happens it’s going to bite us at some point.

The only reason we went into Iraq was Saddam had decided to sell his oil in Euros not Dollars and the USA couldn’t print those to pay for their oil needs.. The first thing that happened post GW2 was the currency changed back to Dollars.

We destabilised two countries, the first over oil, the second trying to bring democracy to a people that do not even have the word in their language.

The two are quite different as are our reasons for being there so there are two questions to be asked and answered. I suspect we will leave Afghanistan much as we found it and in the long term that country will remain as intractable and as enigmatic as it has for the past three centuries.
The Iraq question depends on whether you believe we should have gone there or not. There are probably many good things and many bad but reading about how Saddam’s destruction of the ancient marshlands, home of the marsh Arabs for centuries, is being restored against all the odds is just one positive example of the good. But it will probably take another ten years to determine whether or not Iraq has become a better place than it was under the tyrant.
