It has long been recognised that during WW11 the British were well ahead of the USA in designing and producing in-line engines. One only has to look at the difference in the performance of the Mustang once allied with the Merlin instead of it’s original Allison.
That has set me thinking, what would have happened, in performance terms, if that had been duplicated with the P-38?
