What if JSF was split into two separate programmes?

Lets say we went back in time and broke up the JSF into two projects, one a low cost strike fighter for the USAF and USN, the other a VTOL attacker for the USMC and RN. What would these two very different planes look like? Would the the former look like the Chinese J-31? What about the VTOL attacker, does it even need to be supersonic?
