What is happening with Duxford's Phantom?

While i was at the 90th anniversary airshow yesterday i came across the museum’s (or is it still the OFMC’s?) F4 FGR mk2 XV474 with a large number of panels removed and the nose opened can anyone tell me if there is a reason for this? and if there is anything happening with her?

Also i did notice puddles of water underneath her is there something going on or do the hangars leak badly as i dont think i have seen water in any of the hangars all the years i have gone to Duxford?

Here is a couple of pics illustating what i mean

… And what more fitting a tribute to two great guys that helped make Duxford what it is today.. Ray and Mark Hanna.

It would be nice if they could Fly the Phantom in memory of Mark Hanna, the Duxford ground crew that used to run it up must be still around somewhere ,,they may even read these Flypast Forums ,who knows ?? ,any chance of you lads getting together again and ground running the Phantom ,it would be a big crowd puller at the museum ,more visitors must be good ,if the policy now days is not to do this type of thing ,,then change it to what the visitors would want,i for one would go and see it

You know what fella, i think that is an excellent idea. Take a look at how popular the Lightnings are at Cranfield and Bruntingthorpe. Not being flown, just started, taxied and a run down the runway.

I realise the Phantom is a thirsty beast but if the IWM were to advertise a day when it would be fired up, taxied and then a gentle run or two down there runway i’m sure there are plenty of people who would go just to see that spectacle and of course thats extra revenue through the gates that would help pay.

I could be wrong but surely its worth considering guys…

Gentlemen,

Check out the posting on page.1 re; Phantom to fly??

Is it possible somebody’s checking her over for a ferry flight to Scampton?
Now that’ll be a sight to see though I think it very unlikely. It would surely need months of checking and calibration for that to even be remotely possible.

It’s not unknown for an IWM a/c to fly. Witness the Bf109 Black Six.

The structure/frame inside the radome on XV474 is a ballast weight put in when the massive radar set was taken out and so the plane could be ferried to Duxford.

All the radars were removed and destroyed thereby removing the Phantom’s most potent asset – its eyes. Probably as per a directive from the Americans.

If you would care to read all of Page 1, it has been stated unequivocally, by an IWM member of staff that it is an IWM airframe, and will neither run or fly again.

I would suggest that it is undergoing conservation at present.

Am i right in thinking that Black 6 was always owned by the RAF Museum, not IWM?

Peter

Yes, absolutely correct.

In my ignorance of treaties etc, when I heard the rumblings that the cold war would be starting again and after the sence of dega vu my next thought was will a phantom be allowed to fly now? But from the previous posts it does not look likely. 🙁

If she was to run again, I’d definately go down to see it as it would probably be the closest any UK Phantom would get to being airborne. The memories of RAF Wattisham are flooding back – sniff sniff……. 🙁

UK Phantoms

With the Russians opting out of this agreement, does this mean there could be light at the end of the tunnel for the remaining UK Phantoms???

Both hangars 4 and 5 were initially closed to the public on Saturday due to large amounts of water, roof leak or otherwise I don’t know. Hangar 4 did open a little later in the morning but I never did check to see if 5 was open later.

Yes I can confirm what looked like puddles of water under the Phantom. It was a pity that a quick mop job or a bucket or two could not have been placed strategically (that is if the hangar does leak or the rain lashed under doors).

For a 90th year anniversary weekend though the Phatom was in a sorry state with panels and bits open all over.
