Thanks. It appears to be based on a Salmson 2A2

At Chorley, Bygone Times? 1999. Seems to have deteriorated since then!

Yes it is a dummy static representing a WWI aircraft used in a film. It was at one time reportedly owned by Visionair and decades ago was stored dismantled at Coventry. IIRC. It surfaced again with an antiques company up north and was then sold on. Some folk have suggested that it was meant to represent a Sopwith One and a Half Strutter

It is a still from a movie camera shot through the Perspex of a Luftwaffe aircraft; it may only be 8mm to start with.
Somebody must know the famous sequence with the captured Spitfire trailing smoke (and with the roundels too far into the fuselage).

Whatever it is it’s not a photo – it’s a pen and ink job, surely, of the artists imagination……

I think that 467 is right, I’d convinced myself that I could see the t tail.

It’s a sort of Rorschach inkblot test for aviation people – what do you see in this shape?

Vickers Wellington, going off the long thin wing profile. It looks more like a charcoal drawing than a photograph.
The more i look at it the more i’m certain its a Wimpy.
just googled the date on the note 24/11/40 and there were some Wellington’s destroyed on the ground in Malta on that day….. might be just me putting 2+2 and coming up with 5……….

Has the look of a painting, but isn’t there something ‘Meteor’ about it?

More wood in them than you would think…..!

I think UFA were having a bad props department day.

The wings look like a canvas stretcher with a roundel painted on.

Spitfire ‘Tangled Mess of Wood and Metal’ well I don’t think much of their Intelligence Dept

Looks like a bf-109 to me. Why use a mock up if you have war weary/damaged aircraft at your disposal?!
By: Malcolm McKay - 13th August 2013 at 03:58
I’d go for it being a mock up of some kind.
By: bravo24 - 13th August 2013 at 01:15
Fairey Barracuda ??????
By: Creaking Door - 12th August 2013 at 23:55
It isn’t an aircraft; it’s a mock-up!
I think this comes from a fairly well-known Nazi propaganda film sequence where a captured spitfire ‘attacks’ a Luftwaffe bomber, is ‘hit’ by return fire and peels-away trailing smoke. In another quick sequence the bomber over-flys this ‘Spitfire’ wreckage mock-up so that the ‘kill’ can be confirmed (for the audience).
Anyway, that’s what I think it is.

Well, though it says Spitfire on the back caption, it looks more Hurricane and heavily doctored at that.

Sad that someone knows something about an aircraft which isn’t a Spitfire or a 787?…..
By: Arabella-Cox - 25th November 2012 at 23:57
How Sad!
