What is the most exotic airline you've flown?

If you’ll forgive me for starting an A.net-like thread like this… I think it can be quite interesting considering there are members from everywhere on this forum.

I’ll start with the most exotic airline I’ve been on;

Lao Aviation
The national airline of the Lao Peoples’ Democratic Republic. I flew on their 1969 non-advanced B737-200 RDPL-34125 a few times in 1995, between Bangkok and Vientiane. In 1996 they switched to another 737 but shortly thereafter the owner repossessed it due to outstanding lease payments. Nowadays they fly a Vietnamese A320 under their new name Lao Airlines, but when I was in the country they still operated An-26RVs, Mi-8s and Y-7s on their domestic routes. They were also the only operator outside of China to operate the Y-12, a small turboprop resembling the Twin Otter. Their safety record left a lot to be desired and several embassies advised their countrymen in Laos not to fly Lao Aviation… today it’s a bit better I’ve heard. My 737, on the other hand, crashed a few years ago in Indonesia whilst flying for someone else.

Air Canada
Not that remarkable, but I’d like to mention it anyway. What was probably my last flight on a 737-200 took place in April 2002, on C-GWPW carrying Canadian titles, from Chicago to Montreal. A lovely surprise as I had expected an A319 without any soul whatsoever…

Other than that, I’ve mostly flown the usual carriers within Europe… mostly SAS and Lufthansa but also British Airways, British Midland (when they looked great and wasn’t called ‘bmi’), KLM, Swiss to name a few.

Dreaming about/would like to fly on:

– Canadian North 737-200 with gravel kit on icy runways 🙂
– TAME Ecuador 727-100
– Saha Air 707
– Any IL-62

Now it’s your turn!

Are you sure it wasn’t the former Air Canada A320 painted up in the Toronto Raptors scheme. 😉

It was back in 1992 . I don’t think so 🙂

I remember once , back in 92 , we were waiting at Djerba for boarding in a 727 to fly back home.
Next to our gate was seating a jurassic 707 (I forgot the airline) with the people that already took their seat.
In the mean time some guys from the “ground crew” were doing some kind of maintenance on engine #1.
The guy was standing on a stepladder, holding a blowtorch and was welding something under the wind with the people onboard.

Scary !!!

Hand,

organised trip as part of a tour – very interesting day out – Tu134 flight was an experience ! particularly the take off and landings. (acceleration was not a feature) 😉
Cruise was ok although the interior was basic – had its own ice making facility or emergency exit (ice forming on inside screw heads etc) Flew well but seemed to have different techniques for approach / landings – flaps/gear left until quite late and then a bootful of power to reduce rate of plummet – in fact on return to Moscow DME I honestly thought we were going around because of the power levels but no we landed gently – did not fancy another 20 minutes in the storm we have just gone though (very bouncy)
(pics on the usual sites or if I can remember how I could post some here)

That’s a hell of an experience !

I’ve had a boring career, aviation wise.

Most exotic I’ve flown is Sabena with a 732 and either an Avro RJ100 for BAE 146-200. My knowledge back then wasn’t enough to dstinguish between the two.

It was a French charter airline back in the 80’s
We flew in 84 to Heraklion (Crete) and they were operating a couple of DC8.
The company was called “Point Air” and based at Mulhouse Basel airport.

Did you get to fly on that stretched DC-8 Hand?

Not flown much exotic really. Just BMI (also for my next flight), easyJet, Ryanair, Buzz and VBird. By now maybe Buzz counts as exotic? Perhaps even VBird, with their load factors I must be one of the only people to have flown them! 😀

I’ve vowed never to fly on a DC10 again, and to this day I have kept my promise. 😮 😀

You could hold me to that too! My worst flight ever was AOM French Airlines on a DC-10, air conditioning not working (we were in bloody Cuba for christ sake!) and the whole flight in general was just a joke. As you said, wires between the panels and it was a tip! Unless it was a ‘proper’ airline (which isn’t gonna happen, seeing as most airlines operating DC-10’s are now third world and there are barely any charter versions around anymore) I don’t think I’d like to fly one again. MD-11 however, is another story!
