What is this a torpedo calculator?

These pics are from “Hunt for Red October”

Been curious for years as to what these were, some kind of slide rule for working out speed and bearing?

Anyone know where I can get my hands on one or wants to sell one?

I don’t think bratwurstdimsum was referring to the stopwatch but rather to the other implement the officer is holding.

I think this was the scene where they did a high speed run down a undersea canyon or valley and were timing their turns to avoid crashing.

a simple stopwatch, like in the old days you launched a torpedo and you knew how long it would take for the torpedo to impact, so you follow on the stopwatch, if you didn’t here a bang anter the calculated time, you well missed 😀
