dark light

What is wrong with this forum, or what is wrong with this forum?

I know this is controversial, so expect it to be removed. However, with the removal of DCW’s excellent Duxford Diary, something must be wrong with this forum….

We have lots of enthusiasts and it is (usually) a good place to hang out and chat all things historic. However, we do have quite a few people who feel their opinion is king and all others minions! I know of many forumites who are fed up with the sniping, pedantics etc.
I will never forget the chap who insinuated I was stupid for saving a Pucara cockpit and should have ‘given my money to a more worthy cause’. Sometimes the snipes are ridiculously personal.

This hobby encapsulates so many interests associated with historic aircraft, including; model making, photography, rumours and gossip, restoration, flying, book writing/research, aviation archaeology (whoops….not sure I am allowed to say that!!). All invoke passions in us and opinions. Cliques do form. Not everyone will always get on. I certainly know that I am not everybody’s cup of tea here!

Like emails and texts, postings can be misconstrued, taken out of context and can advertently (or inadvertently) upset someone.

I don’t know why DCW took down the DD…but I can see why some old ‘personalities’ have gone.

Its a great resource this forum. And its a big enuff hobby with room for all of us. Live and Let Live! Thoughts?

Not altogether a bad idea, a separate forum where only Spitfires, their possible existences or not, paint shades, rivet sizes etc can be argued over infinitely in a safe padded area

Brilliant, Now who is going to start it off? :highly_amused:

You’re demanding proof that this thread exists? You may be on to something existential there.

Isn’t it a bit like an agnostic in a religious debate, where you keep asking for proof of existance, because you want it to be true?

The Burma thread was exceptional, but that said it was exceptional in many ways.

I’ll remind you that, as well as all the dross, we had the ‘straight from the horses mouth’ input from professionals who’d actually been there. And in great depth and detail.

We know more about that expedition than virtually anyone who was not present.

Sad that some chose still to believe the fable despite their input, but that’s the internet, isn’t it? (I saw another outbreak of the ‘chemtrails’ madness only today.)

Moggy

Ah yes, the Burma thread – probably the most divisive thread we have had on the forum.

The thing about agreeing, or not agreeing with each other on this and indeed any subject, is that at some point, you just have to say – ‘I accept that you have a different view to me’ and move on. That didn’t, and doesn’t happen all the time, and is behind the loss of one of the more respected individuals from this forum.

That some people are prepared to accept that there is still more to discover in Myanmar, should not, on the face of it be all that surprising. The vehemence with which some views are defended was a surprise; and there were plenty of occasions where I tried to step in and calm stormy waters.

I do think its incredibly important sometimes to accept that people have a counterview to our own, and that such a view can be just as deeply held.

Ahh methinks I have been misunderstood. What I was trying to say is that I don’t contribute much anymore because I don’t seem to have the same knack for digging out stories that I once had. There’s probably a lot of reasons for that, and as I said, none are the result of the forum. Maybe one day I’ll get my mojo back.

Even if that were true (which it assuredly is not), over the years you have contributed more meaningful human interest posts than the rest of us put together.

Slightly ironic given Kev35’s avatar, but that reminds me of the end scene in “the wizard of oz” where Dorothy turns to scarecrow, and says “I think I’ll miss you most of all”

Without a doubt, the Forum (collectively) is already suffering from SAD (Spitfire Affective Disorder)

Funniest and best post in the whole seven pages of this thread…

Yes indeed, the ‘Breast Beating’ season has started early this year . Normally ‘cabin fever’ does not kick in until after Christmas

Without a doubt, the Forum (collectively) is already suffering from SAD (Spitfire Affective Disorder)

”Symptoms of SAD may consist of difficulty logging on in the morning, morning sickness, tendency to oversleep and over-analyse , and a craving for discussion about Spitfires. Other symptoms include a lack of energy, difficulty concentrating on or completing arguments, withdrawal from friends, family, and social activities, abusing the moderators, and decreased sex drive.[not applicable ] All of this leads to depression, pessimistic feelings of hopelessness, obsession with ‘data plate’ restorations, and lack of pleasure which characterize a person suffering from this disorder. The only remedy is total withdrawal from all Spitfire-related activities, and seasonal relocation to an area where Spitfires are entirely absent, e.g Burma ”.

Anyone weary of introspection might enjoy some or all of the following winter pastimes-

Contemplation, scrutiny, brooding, meditation, soul-searching, egoism, introversion and reflection.

There is nothing at all wrong with the forum. Human nature, however, remains as fickle as ever..!

Some members seem to treat the forum as some sort of personal messaging service between mates.

Absolutely true, and for me, it’s the most off-putting thing about the forum. Some of those bozos even require me to know Cockney rhyming slang.

A work colleague has just commented on the title of this thread after reading it.
” its not whats wrong with this forum but it should read whats wrong with some of the poeple who use this forum”

Maybe he has a point
