RE: California to New Zealand
How about Air America? That had some fairly good sequences in. What about the Harrier scene in True lies, that was different. And lets not forget a whole heap o’ James Bond movies.

California to New Zealand
I forgot the name of the movie, but it was about two small a/c being delivered to New Zealand. One crash landed on an island and the other one pushed true to Australia. But he got lost in the Pacific ocean but an airliner came to the rescue.
Does anyone know the name of the movie. I would love to see it again.

jw

RE: Merlin, was that “633 Squadron”?
“633 Squadron” and “The Dambusters” are complete classics of the two I prefer the Dambusters for the way it portrayed Barnes Wallis and detailed some of the development work behind the story.
My favourite aviation movie has to be “By Dawn’s Early Light” though. It a tremendous film about a B-52 crew that has to SIOP launch following a game of international nuclear brinksmanship. The rather lovely presence of Rebecca DeMournay as the copilot doesnt hurt the story either! 🙂
Cheers,
Steve

Merlin:
I think the film you have in mind is “633 Squadron”, directed by Walter Grauman and starring Cliff Robertson and George Chakiris.
It’s quite a favourite of mine too; not for any particularly outstanding cinematic or artistic qualities, but simply for its inclusion of aircrew of several nationalities besides British and American — including, just in case anyone missed him, an Indian. Minor characters, mostly, but shown with a nod of respect to the contributions from the rest of the Allies.
The climax of “633 Squadron”, showing Mosquitoes flying through a narrow Norwegian fjord, to attack a sheltered target right at the end, was I think said to have been an influence on the Death Star attack sequence in the first “Star Wars” movie.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-08-02 AT 03:51Â PM (GMT)]I would have to agree with Saab and T5… Castaway did have a very realistic crash in it and Air force did to at the end. Both great movies in their own right.
Worst a/c movies of all time were the airplane movies…cheap and poorley made not really that funny either!

There was one funny part in it, when the football fell of the deck. WIIIIIILSOOOOOOOOOOON!!!!!! 😀 But I prefer Tom Hanks 😀
Cast Away, now that’s a good aviation related movie.

RE: What is your best aviation movie?
I think Tora Tora Tora was the best aviation movie Ive seen as far as realistcally depicting mil av warfare. I saw a movie with Rock Hudson that was made back in the sixtys about being put in charge of a SAC wing. It also realistally depicted mil aviation, I cant stand aviation movies contrived to be dramatic.

RE: What is your best aviation movie?
Good question. My all time favourite is Stephen King’s “The Langoliers” which I bought online for about £4 and was chuffed! I can sit and watch it over and over again and still get just as much excitement from it!
Secondly, Air Force One with Harrison (is this now banned in the US as a result of 11/09?) I’ve seen this film a number of times and thoroughyl enjoy it.

RE: Phantom at it again!!!!!
I have to agree with Ference.
Final Countdown was the most fascinating war film I have ever seen. The whole idea of a 1980 US carrier launching its aircraft against the 1941 Jap fleet really was food for thought.
There wasn’t all that much aerial warfare, but the Tomcats -v- Zero scenes were comical. It might have been sci-fi, but I never tire of watching the video. Great stuff!!!

RE: Phantom at it again!!!!!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-08-02 AT 08:25Â AM (GMT)]Ofcourse it was because of the F-4 acting as a MiG, Fer is right. Before you accuse me, try to check the original message, and than you’ll see I was replying to that.
If you think the idea of a F-4 acting as a MiG-29 is ‘cool’, than you are the big loser here.
Ever seen the movie ” A beautiful mind”, Phantom? Or Rainman?

Phantom at it again!!!!!
PhantomII,
“Geforce you are becoming a bigger loser everytime you make a post.
You back to dissing my Phantoms again?
What is it about tree huggers and not learning when to shut up? (Unless of course you simply meant the idea of an F-4 looking like a MiG is laughable in which case I agree with you.)”
Read the message before you insult people. It is OBVIOUS that Geforce’s comment was about the F-4 posing as a MIG.
YOU NEED TO RELAX!!!
Stop insulting people!
Ference.

RE: What is your best aviation movie?
Although not technically completely about aviation,Castaway was my favourite aviation movie as it features a quite realistic DC-10 crash (could of been an A300,not sure)Also it features the cargo base of Fedex at Memphis and also Moscow airport.
I’m not sure what good that movie would of done for Fedex!

RE: What is your best aviation movie?
Maybe a weird choice, but I really liked “The Final Countdown”, when the Nimitz travelled back into time to just moments before Pearl Harbour. Very unrealistic plot of course, but great aviation footage.
Best regards,
Ference.

RE: What is your best aviation movie?
All these movies are just crappy low budget Hollywood productions. Iron Eagle II was just laughable, just because of that F-4. Had to turn it off.

RE: What is your best aviation movie?
Flight of the Intruder is a good one, also Top Gun, crap on the whole really apart from the flying sequences, also there are two whose names escape me, one was where an entire aircraft carrier went back in time and the other was about aggressor pilots at Nellis AFB, loads of F-4s in that one I believe William Devane was in it, also Iron Eagle II because it has Israeli F-4s masquerading as MiGs in it.
