What Languages do you speak?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-05-02 AT 04:47 PM (GMT)]With so many different people from all around the world on these forums I guess it would be a good question to ask what languages do you all speak?
I am fluent in English,
Fluent in our Islands own dialect of French (Guernesiais)
Pretty cofident on my French,
And I know enough spanish to get me by!

RE: What Languages do you speak?

I’m always being told I’ve got a strange accent, both by English people and foreigners. I lived in Barnsley for a while, Rotherham, Derbyshire and most of the time in Scarborough, so my accent is a combination of South Yorkshire and North-east Yorkshire, which can sound unusual!!! The Yorkshire sayings I’ve been posting are usually just said for a laugh, I don’t know of anyone who talks like that the whole time.. I quite like the way Scousers talk, we have some friends there.

RE: Malay, Indonesian, it’s all the same…

A+ for you Minmiester, splendid translation.I just an ordinary citizen just like any other proud citizen of the world.I strongly believed that everyone should be proud of their own country regardless what others might thinks.(i’m sure you ‘re of those proud and friendly Aussie yourself).I’m born in KL 30 years ago, opted to left the govt. service early(not easy )and i believed that i did post my mailing address somewhere in the general forum.Pastinya kehidupan di Australia adalah lebih baik berbanding di Malaysia, namum ada waktunya KL menjanjikan sesuatu yg lebih bermakna.;-)

RE: What Languages do you speak?

North of the Watford Gap AND east of the Pennines Rabie. Although TV will try and say otherwise (like in Emmerdale for instance), Yorkshire and Lancashire accents are totally different (it is a rarity to hear a Yorkshire accent in Emmerdale, everyone has a Lancahire accent and it shows). In Yorkshire “there” is said “theear” and rhymes with “ear”. In Lancashire “there” is “thur” and rhymes with “fur”.

Malay, Indonesian, it’s all the same…

…really, they’re very much the same

How’s this attempt Tomel:

I am fluent in reading and writing in Malay, Indonesian and English. I can also use some Thai and Tagalog, but not as fluently/well.

There, how’s that!

You seem like a very proud Malaysian. You may find it of interest that I was born in Malaysia, but migrated to Australia at a very young age.

Where in Malaysia are you?

RE: What Languages do you speak?

Gee, my waffle eating friend,

I am truly impressed by the additions of Spanish, Afrikaans, Latin and Ancient Greek to your list.
Of course my first language is English, but, ñ ÇÏ×ÏÒÀ ËÏÎÅÞÎÏ ÐÏ ÒÕÓÓËÉÉ. Some German. My Latin is a bit rusty, but that does not seem to matter in an aviation forum. I did know Arabic, but that is probably irretrievably lost by now. I found I could not master the tonality in Vietnamese, and I tried to learn Georgian but failed utterly and in panic.
And no, not just “another bloody American”, but a very bloody American. 😉

RE: What Languages do you speak?

Geforce I got it translated over the weekend, no problem really I’ve always been pretty good at learning languages, it’s something I enjoy doing, a hobby more than anything serious.
Here are some more Yorkshire (Barnsley) phrases for you. I don’t talk in that way but my Grandfather did and he would do it to annoy my Grandmother more than anything.
“Does ta want some meyt for thi dinner?” (Do you want some meat for your dinner – the “meyt” rhymes with the English word “eight”)
“Ah’ll gerrit tekken”. (“I will get it taken,” usually said to mean “I will take the dog for a walk”).

RE: What Languages do you speak?

Good luck with the translation.

Dutch is such a nice language, discovered by a drunk english sailor who tried to speak German.

Try to find the meaning of this word : “hottentottententententoonstelling”

RE: What Languages do you speak?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-05-02 AT 09:40 AM (GMT)]Thanks alot Geforce!!!:-) I knew that would happen one day. I got one or two words of that but I admit not the whole of it. I have written it down to translate later!!
Here is some Yorkshire dialect.
“Can ta talk Tyke?” (always works when people pester).
“Put t’wood in t’oil”. (close the door).
“Coil oil” (coal shed).
Many Belgians I’ve come across think I’m German because my English accent sounds so unusual to them!!!

RE: What Languages do you speak?

Dutch is my native language. English is my ‘runner up’, I speak it quite fluently. Futhermore I can speak and write quite a bit of French and German. HMy Hebrew though is bit limited: I learned it as a young child, so my Hebrew is a bit childish. Yet a few years ago I learned to read, though on a very, very limited basis.
