What makes you proud of your country?

We all live in quite a few different countries so what makes you proud of your country?
For me in the UK it is:
1-Our long and important history.
2-Our great sense of occasion.
3-Our television
4-Our monachy
5-The culture
Can you think of anymore?

RE: What makes you proud of your country?

Most of the money at the moment goes to the health service or the welfare system. All the new money is going to the health service.

Answer your question?

What makes you proud of your country?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-04-02 AT 09:06 AM (GMT)]Well, we have similar problems here in Belgium. Bureaucracy, as we like to call it (or even Eurocracy). Those are problems which could be solved very easily, but the public services just don’t want to change. In Belgium, they are way too powerful, but with a liberal government, they can’t do much. Privatising those entreprises should have worked, but we all know what happened with Sabena. Some services should be state controlled, like public transport. Not because private sector can’t do better, but to keep prices low. Others like phone operators, transport companies should be privatised ASAP. Otherwise you end up in very complicated situations. In B. for example, Belgacom (phone company) is run by our federal government, but another similar company, Telenet, is partially property of the Flemish government. They are both competitors, but the prices are unreasonably high. (just look at my internet bill). Now those two companies have ended up in court, both paying their lawyers with tax money :7. (federal and state :-)). Democracy is expensive!!!

Ohh, another nice investment. From now on, on the 11th July (Flemish national holiday), you can ask our government a cheque to organise a party in your community. In other means, let the beer flow, the public pays! I’m beginning to doubt about the credibility of our coalition government. }>

RE: What makes you proud of your country?

There are a lot of things to be very proud of if you’re British – I’ve said already. The thing is, don’t you ever feel ashamed of the way your country is being run? Britain is the world’s 4th largest economy, the 2nd in Europe. Unemployment is at an all time low and the economy is growing again – yet look at the public services. When I said I’d have to wait 15 weeks to see a consultant for minor surgery I wasn’t lying (the operation would be another 10 to 20 weeks after that). I commute every day and I feel that the transport system is also nothing to be proud of. I think Britain is being somehow cheated. Where is all the money, which comes from being such a massive economy, going?

RE: What makes you proud of your country?

Yes BA do hate flying there domestically!Jersey,Guernsey,Plymouth,Aberdeen,IOM have all lost ther Heathrow route. Now BA passengers have to get the bus from Gatwick to Heathrow which causes a lot of hassle.
About Heathrow,I don’t actually think its that bad compared to other European airports,ok is crowdd and old but the passenger services such as shops, cafes ect are great.

Saab – don’t be too proud of Heathrow!

It is grotty, grimy, and BA absolutely hate flying there domestically!! (just annoyed because they axed the IOM-LHR route!)

I suppose T4 aint too bad but the other three badly need renovation.

I am also proud of my county because we have a great sense of humour!I find other European countries take life a bit to seriously.
Also we have the largest airline (BA)and the buisiest airport in Europe(Heathrow)which I am pretty proud of.

RE: What makes you proud of your country?

You could also add to that list:

UK is one of the worlds largest weapons producers, the british invented:

Jet engines if im right
The water cannon for breaking up riots
Steam catapults on carriers
Aresstor Wires on the carriers

And more I would assume

RE: What makes you proud of your country?

What the UK has/does differently to be proud of:

Milk in tea

Ever tried marmite?

Cheddar Cheese

Mushy Peas

Invented fast food with Fish and Chips

Are proud to only have weather (never stop talking about it) when the rest of the world has a climate.

First nation to have a city with more than 1 million people.

First nation to have a city which killed more than 300 people in a week through smog!

An Englishman invented the concept of Europe as we see it ufolding today – his Nation then spend the next fifty years complaining about having it forced upon them by others! (Churchill, before you ask).

And finally, secure the ultimate presitige of creating an activity showing the pinicle of our race’s evolution from animals. Cricket – a game that takes weeks to play and more than a lifetime to learn the rules.

– Having just reviewed my suggestions above is there any reason that Thomas Cook invented the holiday package tour, and those that wern’t so lucky left the country to found a mighty Empire somewhere nice and sunny?

RE: What makes you proud of your country?

Hi all,
I was born in Northern Ireland but moved to Australia when i was about 4 and while i am proud of my Irish herritage i feel Australian.
I don’t know how to describe it but just walking around the streets of Geelong there is an air of optimism the sense that anything is possible the place just has a good feel bad stuff that happens in the world doesn’t seem to get people down they care about how their favorite football team is going to go on the weekend. maybe it’s because Australia doesn’t have a long history that it doesn’t get bogged down in the past so it always has it’s head in the future direction. i just think Australia is good but every country has something good.

United States

Well, I may not be the best ambassador for the United States, but I guess I’ll be the first to claim it as my nation on this thread. I’m proud of my country for the freedom it allows us as individuals. This probably sounds very similar to what Kev35 said. It is true. Freedom is a wonderful thing, and I’m saddened by the cruel regimes such as that of Iraq that are still present in a few areas of the world. Secondly, I’m proud of my country because of the opportunities it gives everyone. If you are willing to work hard, you can have a successful and very fulfilling life here in the States. Thirdly, I’m proud of my country for the way that we all band together during times of national crisis (Pearl Harbor and 9/11 come to mind). I’ve not met many Americans who aren’t proud of their nation for this reason. Most of us are patriots true to heart. I’m also proud of my nation for the influence it has had on the world. Some of it hasn’t been good, but I’d vouch that much of it has. I’m also proud of the history and continuing tradition of our five branches of the armed forces. My heart goes out to every Air Force, Navy, Marine, Army, and Coast Guard serviceman out there, no matter what their position. I recently received a scholarship offer from the Air Force to the ROTC program and I plan to become an officer in the USAF. I want to do it to live my dream of flying and to serve my country, which I feel is important. Although some would beg to differ, I say: “Long Live the U.S.A.”

Haha, now you see. Why do all the Dutch make fun of us? When they have the chance though, they move to Belgium.

RE: What makes you proud of your country?

To be honest, I am not proud of my country (The Netherlands). That’s why I work and live in either Belgium and Spain, and as a 1/2 Belgium, I am thinking of chanching my nationality from a Dutch to a Belgium one.

RE: What makes you proud of your country?

Being born in a certain country is purely incedental and I all countries have good and things. So I wouldn´t say proud of, but happy of living…because we can only be proud of what we have responsible for (careers, ability to do something, deeds and so on). I love all countries. AS you know I live in Spain and I enjoy the way the people enjoy life, the caring for family, friends and relatives, and the typical “Savoire faire” of all latin countries concerning to eating, drinking, having fun and taste for art and all that small things which make us particular as fiesta, siesta and so on. I am ashamed of Bullfighting.

But I live in England at the moment and I find England a nice place to live. I do find most British people prideful of their country.
