What music do people like?

Huge fan of Music here. It’s a part of life, life without Music is like life without Breathing… Its just not possible.

I’m a Metal guy at heart, first and foremost the early Metal/Rock genre heavily influenced Blues type that goes way back when, (before Elvis, he merely adopted Rock n’ Roll). So, Led Zeppelin (I mistrust anyone that dislikes them), The Kinks, The Troggs, Thunderclap Newman, Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd etc. later, Iron Maiden whom are my main influence, Anthrax, Megadeth, early Slayer, Scoprions… etc. etc. etc. There’s a huge list and not just in Metal/Rock. Richie Havens, Buddy Holly, Jack White, Gary Numan – specifically latter Numan,… Simply put, Blues, Jazz, Progressive Rock, RnB (not this Beyonc� sh*te, real RnB), Alternative, Industrial. My favourite right now is a Swedish band called Cult of Luna, incredibly talented, inspirational and rather nice guys, know them well.

Just, good music. Other than Dance/Hard Style, Trance or whatever this utter crap is called this week, I usually respect Music that does nothing for me but this is an exception – standing on a Mixing/DJ Desk ruining someone else’s Art by adding bass beats and speeding it all up, is not Art nor Music… Soulless cr*p, and I don’t respect it! Pop is a no-no, put that’s down to Mainstream and ‘Contacts’ in the industry that just want big Bucks.

I’m a Touring/Studio Musician at the moment, as of mid/late last year, currently playing Live for… rather not say… and currently in the US, played NYC last night (ghastly place, don’t like it.) and Boston, MA (cool place) tonight then Montreal after this then somewhere else, I forget, but it’s great fun and quite an experience. I play Guitar (beloved Gibson Les Paul Custom before they went all Corporate and Crap), and it’s a huge part of life for me, words cannot describe. Pretty special, especially as a fan of Music – Good Music – where influence is the key to playing, for me at least.

I met Jack White last week, came to one of out shows, hung out with us before and after the Gig. What a great guy, fascinating, inspirational.

I will listen to almost anything ,as long as it is good.My record collection spans over pretty much everything/type.
For example two days ago i got my LP’s out and had a blast of Hendrix,then Duke Ellington at the Paris Jazz festival,The Hollies,Queen,Classical.
Never ever close your mind or get tied down to what’s popular and trendy.Open your ears and listen to stuff you wouldn’t normally listen to-The Internet is wonderful for hearing stuff that is older,the free selection and access is awesome.
Many years ago there was a jazz record shop [i think it was called Mole Jazz ] outside Kings Cross station.I didn’t know anything about blues and jazz so i used to go in there and buy some 2nd hand LP’s and listen—- some wonderful,some not so but i enjoyed trying them.
I do have to say i don’t fall in love with modern plastic pop stuff so much but with teenagers in the house i do listen and some is actually good.

Sweary groups of bandana-wearing poodle rockers with tattoos and attitudes that have been and gone many times in the last 40-odd years. My eldest listens to most of them and when he has nothing better to do and wants to start something will turn the volume up (with headphones on) to earsplittingly loud and sing along; when confronted about his swearing he points out (like its the most obvious thing in the world) that its just the lyrics, stomps his feet, throws a paddy and storms off to his room complaining that nobody understands…like every other teenager ever.

Think first two album era Guns’n’Roses but with the bass turned down and less insightful lyrics.

For me, punk. Not lame modern US punk, but classic 70’s punk. And some rock, indie, electro, goth, etc. And some classical, some folk, some blues, not much soul, a little reggae, with a smattering of rap, funk, RnB, and ambient.
I despise country and western, really do. And modern ‘pop’ where so much is the work of those unseen and out of sight doing the writing and the playing and auto-tuning the singers voice. And anything that involves audience voting or a panel of celeb judges – the here today gone tomorrow newspaper filling entertainers.
