What kind of music do you hate most? I can’t stand opera, jazz, that horrid club stuff you get rammed down your throat all summer by people with car windows wide open, radios on porches etc. Oh, and Justin Timberlake.

Likes: The Beatles, Rolling Stones, No Doubt, The Offspring, Ms Dynamite, Macy Gray, Elvis, Garbage, Michelle Branch, Shakespears Sister, The Eagles, Culture Club, Black Box Recorder, Blur, Blondie, Madonna, Sugababes, Shania Twain, A, and Oliver Darley to name a few.
Dislikes: Sting, all the muppets from Lame Academy and Poop Idol/Stars except for Girls Aloud who I have to admit I think are pretty good actually, 50 Cent, Fast Food Rockers and others similar (although I did like The Ketchup Song and appreciated the novelty value of the Cheeky Girls first song), Ashanti, Alicia Keys, Dire Straits (yes, vey dire), Meatloaf, boring repetitive trance (some stuff is good, other stuff no way), Dannii Minogue (give it up love, you’re never going to even get within a whisker’s length of the success your sister has) Radiohead, S Club Juniors/8 or what ever they are now, Genesis, Phil Collins and so on…(I could spend all day bitching :p )

P.S. Yes, I know I have a very weird taste in music 🙂

Re Phil Collins. I think Alexis Sayle summed it up when he said.
“Jimi Hendrix DEAD:( , Phil Collins ALIVE”

Mixtec,
I don’t like Tchaikovsky because i think it’s all too frivolous, to daft. It gets on my nerves. Bach is absolutely great though, as is Mozart of course (if you skip the Rondo Turca or whatever it’s called). Shostakovich did make some very nice music i think, his depressing Mahler-like stuff is good, while on the other hand i think his ‘official’ compositions (socialist-realistic crap he had to make to please the Party officials) are worth a listen as well. And definately a lot easier for the ears than many truely ‘modern’ composers: Stockhausen or Czukay are terrible with their non-rythmic dissonant experiments…
I think the great thing about Rammstein is that they manage to make heavy industrial music with a hint of irony in it. Kinda hard to explain, but the monotonous riffs and little opera-esque accents in their music perfectly fit the industrial genre, and i think it sets them quite apart from more regular metal bands.

Speaking of Rammstein, I think they have potenecial of being a seriously good metal band, but they put all this cheap theatrics in their music like the Nina Hagen type of opera singing interludes. And their guitare riffs are very repetative.
Arthur- I cant believe you put down Tchycovsky as a classical composer. He and Bach are the only two good ones for making good melody. Shostakovich ?? Have you even heard this guy? Abstract classical….no thanks!

My Mum likes Jimi Hendrix, I cannot bear him!!
I don’t like Irish folk music either, which is a little inconvenient when I have an Ireland holiday video to dub with music and nothing suitable to put on. Roll on Belgium in September, a damned good video, good aircraft footage and loads of Madonna music to back it (“Like A Prayer” goes brilliantly with taxying and taking off VLM aircraft, believe it or not!!!:) )

I know that strange feeling too. Today, at a traffic light, I had he car stereo somewhat lout playing… Supertramp 🙂 There was one of those young annoying techno listeners at the side, and he looked “surprised”. I bet he was surprised by this new, cool hit.
I remember that Supertramp came on tour in PAris a couple of years ago.
The audience was quite mixed with teenagers and “fiftyagers”.
Some of those kids were interviewed at the end of the show:
“Wooooow they really play guitar and keyboards, that’s great!!”
I guess that this generation is discovering this kund of music.
Music bands are sampling parts of 80’s tunes. Rock n’ roll will never die!!!!

I haven’t really got any styles I really dislike.
If its good music I will listen regardless of genre.
I listen mainly to Heavy Metal(Iron Maiden,Black Sabbath,Early Metallica etc,) Punk and Ska..I listen to Clannad quite alot to.
I do not generally listen to Rap,dance etc but as I say if I like a song -I will listen to it.
Got to admit to being partial to classical though.(Favourite piece the 1812 Overture. That was the first classical piece I really listened to and enjoyed.)

Some military music is nice… well, i do have to admit i really like the Soviet Hymn sung by the Red Army Choir. And the East German anthem was nice to – it starts really slow, but in the middle there’s such a nice teutonical social-realistic outburst of Internationalistic Leftism in it, which makes it irresistable.
As for car-window-boom-boom-i’m-an-annoying-brat: yes, when i have something weird on my car stereo (a 1980s cassete player with an anti-theft keycard! A classic!) in my totally wrong car (a Ford Sierra, with extra-annoying Cosworth wheels) i do turn up the volume with my windows open when waiting for a traffic light.
But alas, no R’nB or Hiphop coming through my window… the Soviet Hymn, the Pogues, Rammstein, corny Dutch tearjerking music…
An exception was when looking for a parking spot for a Rammstein concert a year ago. The car (the same Sierra, but it wasn’t mine yet) was an obnoxious noise-polluter, but it’s soooo nice to drive slowly to people visiting a Rammstein concert when your car stereo is playing Mel & Kim 😀
I will try the classical stuff at a downtown summer drive though. Mahler should be good, but i think a bit of Bach’s Brandenburger Concertos or Shostakovich would be equally impressive.
And if not impressive, it would certainly be astranging.
PS: I won’t do the Ouverture 1812. It was fatally destroyed by Gonzo in the Muppet show: the first human cannon ball playing the Ouverture 1812 on a violin… i will never be able to hear that music again without seeing that purple furry hook-beaked bird flying in an Evil Knievel suit…

Whalebone
I have often wished though that I had the bottle to cruise sedately down the local High Street in the family car with some chums clad in full evening dress blasting out some Mahler or the 1812 at 130db, just for the hoot of it !!
😀 I salute You! 😀
Monty Pythons Flying Circus comes to mind.
Love to see it happen :p
