This has been in my school workshop for quite a while and I’ve never worked out what it is. It doesn’t look like a MATRA pod, unless there there were models without the pointy front. A child pushed it over today and it re ignited my interest. Whatever it is, going by the serial it was number 2. The 5D part number suggests British. There are, thankfully, no rockets in it. Help much appreciated!

As mentioned, it’s definitely a Matra 116M
“The Type 116M launcher was a lightly constructed, single use, pod with a frangible nose cone. It was loaded with 19 68mm SNEB RPs which were fired in a single ‘rippled’ 0.5 second salvo with a time interval of 33 milliseconds between each rocket.”

Thanks for the suggestions. The tubes are 68mm so I think the SNEB has it, but I can’t find a decent picture. The best I’ve found is peeking out here on the left a pointy one.

The frangible cover lives on top of a cupboard out of reach now. Bad children had dropped it over the head and shoulders of the smallest child in the class. The sight of him scuttling around the workshop, only his legs visible and with his peers slapping the cover cheered me for days. Now the Daily Mail would love that…

Think of the children ~ Weapons of Mass Destruction in a school and front of a fire blanket; they’ll all be dead within a week. Where’s the phone number for the Daily Wail ………………………… :diablo:

That just screams Matra 🙂

SNEB made/designed the rockets – pods could be made by Matra or others. In the late 60s/early 70s, there were two pods in use, one with a pointy nose and one with a rounded frangible cap – this is obviously the latter
It could also be a UK 2 inch rocket pod, which preceded the 68mm in RAF servce (and was used by the RN until the 80s/90s)

Thanks Anon. SNEB does look similar. I’ll measure the tube diameters tomorrow. Each is about the diameter of a 500ml can and an early plan was to convert it into a drinks dispenser (without any cutting).

Rocket pod
It might be a SNEB pod.
Carried on early Harrier and the Phantom, 1960’s-70s era.
Some of the ex-RAF armourers/ground engineers on this forum will recognise it for what it is (or isn’t!).
