What state is Hendon in lately?

I’m popping in to Hendon on the way to somewhere else next week, and I’ve not been since last October. What state is the place in currently, with the building work and all that?

You only have to look at the Canadian ones to see what it does to them.

Wash your mouth out with soap and water alexis!! lol The last thing you wanna do with a Lanc (or just about anything else for that matter) is stick it outside on a pole!Lets hope you haven’t given the RAFM any ideas!!

Still think she’d look better on a pole outside in formation with the Spitfire and Hurricane.

LOL! Well yes, the poor old girl is still well and truly tail-high on her budgie perch, but there are signs that she’s being looked after in other ways, so that’s okay; both wing tips are off, presumably for some remidial work to be donet here somewhere, though both tips were still at Hendon today-one by the Lanc, one by the Wimpey. There was one spinner off, and a bare patch of metal on the port bomb door, too.
Otherwise things were nice and tidy at Hendon in general though, and the progress on the new building already was amazing!

Poor old Lancman, why he does like to torture himself so much ?
Lets all have a bet that he can’t stay away from the Bomber Command Hall and if he cant, he won’t come out seething and foaming at the mouth. Why oh why does he put himself through it ? }>
Seriously though, enjoy a good day out Lancman we look forward to your customary report.

Neilly – The wing is from the wreck of Sea Mosquito TR.33 TW233 and was rescued from a Kibbutz. The wing is of the non-folding type(Sea Mosquito) – she was fitted with oleo-pneumatic undercarriage units but these are being substituted for rubber in compression units as per FB.VI.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-09-02 AT 05:53 PM (GMT)]Hi Steve,

I’ll find out about the wings origins. I know the IAF only had 2 Sea Mosquitoes on their charge, so the percentages are against, but I will find out.

The Museum are hoping to mate the wings to the fuz next year, so that’ll be something special to look forward to.

That’s the one. I heard it was recovered from Israel some years ago, but also that it was a rare non-folding Sea Mosquito. As I’m not that well up on Mossie’s, I don’t know how true that is. Either way, nice to see she’s progressing nicely. 🙂

Hi Steve,

The fuz has been totally recovered & that’s the first coat of dope. There are 2 more red, then silver (UV protection), then primer & finally the finishing paint job.

The 2nd picture didn’t come out to well, but it’s supposed to show the wing ribs. The wing itself came from Israel, I don’t think it belonged to a Sea Mosquito. It’s certainly a one piece wing, with no joins in it.

Neilly, I take it your second photo is of the Sea Mosquito wings which will be fitted to her? Progress looks pretty good, although she’s a bit redder than when I last saw her at Skysport, has she had another dope coat?

RE: What state is Hendon in lately?

Hi Lancman,

I was there a fortnight ago & thought the RAF Museum was in resonable shape (I hadn’t been there for 15 years so I don’t know all the upheavals that have been going on, apart from what I’ve read.

As for the Mosquito Museum (Salisbury Hall is my favourite piece of hallowed ground!) is a great place to go on a Sunday, because the guys are working on the airframes (the FB VI is starting to look great!) & will always stop & chat if you have a question. A really friendly place to visit.

Hope you have a good day out,
Neilly

Ha, nice one!

Maybe if I’m in the right frame of mind, I’ll ask to speak to someone at the desk or something…

RE: What state is Hendon in lately?

Hi Lancman

I was there 2 weeks ago and they’d finished messing around in side so there were none of the viewing problems there had been over the last few months. (It helps living just down the road so I can pop in regularly now it’s free!) Some of the car park is closed in front of the main building but I managed to park even during the school holidays so you won’t have any problems.

I’d suggest visiting the Mosquito Museam at London Colney as well if you coming past. .

Peter

PS It’s still on it’s budgie perch…
