What the ell does this do?

Just found this in the back of the shed, does anyone know what its for? Can only think it has something to do with supply containers…..

That looks like a nice and early satchel, I’d even hazard a guess that E.E. Ltd is Elliot’s Equipment Ltd (rather than English Electric) who produced the short lived Elliot’s Equipment Roll stores container which pre-dated the CLE supply container in the early days of Britain’s Parachute forces.

I’d be interested if you didn’t want it.

Well it wasn’t off your (was mine) Auster!
There was some rubbish in it when it was originally collected from Perth but most of the rubbish blew out crossing the Forth Bridge!! That’s when the Police pulled past me pretending not to see it. Perhaps they were near the end of their shift and didn’t fancy the paperwork.

It looks to be the closure panel of a static line parachute pack. The white cord is the static line and it is held in place by all those little loops made of elastic material. The end of the ststic line is clipped inside the aircraft. When you jump out of the aircraft, the line is pulled out of the elastic loops, openning the pack, which allows the spring-loaded pilot chute to eject from inside, pulling the main chute out.

I’ve used this type of parachute on two occassions, way back in 1983. Here’s a picture of me, just before my first jump.

It’s the static lline that pulls the big paracute out to drag the load out the back of the aeroplane. one oend has the small drogue chute attached and the other end is attacned to the big ‘un.
