What the GOOGLE Are The Chances of that?

I live about 300 miles from RAF Coltishall and have been there three times in my life to fly models, once taking my B-17 there for their Battle of Britain weekend Fly-In.

What are the chances of Google Earth catching me there on the day I took the B-17??

Whatever the odds, the spy in the sky got me!

I was airfield spotting and I noticed a bunch of modellers at Colt. I looked a little closer, and could make out the large green rectangle of my trailer, complete with silver duck tape around the edge, amongst the cars, and then turning my eyes to the models, I spotted the Fort.

I think it is towards the end of the day, the sun is in the West casting long shadows, and I think the outer wing panels have been removed from the B-17 as I start to dismantle it. The last attachment shows the B-17 and trailer together at ground level in Norway.

I used the Google measurement tool on the trailer width, length and B-17 length, and they all match spot on!

I found my house too and realised I left the wheelie bin on the end of the drive!!

Here’s what looks to be me stood outside my garage in front of my Dually. I’m guess they were trying to see what I have hidden away in there owing to them waiting until I had the door open to take the picture… 🙂

Tell us more about that fab B-17 you have. What’s sections made from?
What are the engines? Does it drop live bombs, water balloons, or
eggs? Are the guns BBs or 22 cal? What’s the fuel range? Onboard
camera?

I think most of your questions can be answered here, B-17G “Hang The Expense”, otherwise send me a PM.

I’ve quit nude sun bathing.

I do hope the satellites haven’t made you stop.
Unless you’re a very large woman (say the size of a Beverly) I don’t think the Google satellite photos would show anything salacious.

Now, if you quit because of neighboring apartment blocks, traffic cameras and low flying police helicopters, that’s another story.

Steve: I do not have the mathematical skill to give an exact answer to this, but probability is a subject in it’s own right.

You would need to know more facts to get the exact 1:n figure. I don’t know how often photographs are taken of any one spot. Lets say that the spot you stood at is photographed 3000 times a day, every single day. With that in mind, the chances of you being caught are extremely high.

Do you see what I mean. So obviously the number of photos taken and frequency is essential.

You also will want to bear in mind that not all the photos taken will be useable due to cloud coverage.

Probablility is usually a lot higher than one realises. Personally, I think you are being followed.

I’ve quit nude sun bathing.

They won’t catch me again, I’m going into hiding!

If anyone asks, you never saw me.

I doubt it!! I don’t think I’ll ever be back at Coltishall to fly.

Steve

No no, that was the first time.

Now to catch you a second time…. 🙂

Still, the chances of being caught at a place I’ve only been to three times has got to be remote! If I had been caught on my driveway, cleaning the car, in the garden, I could understand it, after all, I’m there alot of the time, but 300 miles from home in an unusual location is very random chance!

Anyone caught the neighbour sunbathing naked??

As Megalith says… We notice coincidences that involve us. The odds of it being ourselves we spot are small. The odds of us merely spotting someone – anyone – are much larger. However that doesn’t stop it being a funny feeling when it does happen to you, does it?

My personal jaw-on-floor was being at the National Archives and finding that I was looking for the same person’s service record as someone else was. Lets say a million people visit every year, the likelihood of that happening (given how much interest there is in the WW1 service documents) to someone is probably fairly large. It’s got to happen sometime, especially given that anoyone who served in WW1 would have at least three generations of descendants. But it is going to be much less likely to happen to ME – a million times less likely if I am one of a million visitors? Perhaps, but the mathematics of chance just ain’t like that. For starters, not all of that 1 million are looking at the WW1 docs…

It’s not simple is it? (he says, stopping before he confuses hell out of himself!)

And no, it STILL doesn’t stop it being great fun when you do spot yourself!

Hi,

Just some food for thought here; we notice coincidences, but we don’t notice non coincidences.

Wow, the chances of that happening must be minute. Can anyone else find anything like this of theirs on google earth?
