What were the weasels called?

We have had a tiny kitten turn up on our doorstep a few weeks ago, seemingly brought home by our benevolent tabby. The kitten is a little black and white moggy, and he clearly must have been a stray ferral cat. He looked like he was starving, and he had definately decided to make his home under our deck, if we liked it or not. He was only about seven weeks old when he turned up. Poor little mite.

So we decided to feed him after a week of him hanging round and playing with our cats. We worked out he didn’t belong to anyone else, and we were stuck with him. So we feed him now. (We’ve had stray cats turn up before, the first starved to death when we ignored the poor old thing, and so we have heavy consciences and help out the needy now. I’m sure they have a network like the tramps or the French Underground saying which are the best houses to go to, they always turn up here! One such stray that arrived is now a family cat, a massive Persian called Blackie.

Anyway, we’re trying to think of a name for this kitten. The thing with him is, although he’s now starting to gain our trust a little, if you get close to him he freaks out and gets all defensive. As well as hissing, he pops just like a weasel. It’s quite odd, and gives you quite a start if you’re not expecting it.

So we were thinking of finding a name that belonged to a weasel character if it suits him. In “The Wind And The Willows” there was Chief Weasel, but he had henchmen too. Does anyone know what their names were?

Or, do you know of any other famous weasel names from other books or elsewhere? (or other things that go “pop!”) 🙂

W00t…bit of a coincidence there – My cat’s called Blackie. She turned up on our doorstep about 8 years ago and started to hang around with my older cat Sooty (who unfortunatly is up there in the sky now after the vet took loads of his teeth out and didn’t bother to tell us.) She was pretty damn sick and thin – we fed her and sorted her fleas etc out (she was about 6mnths old at the time) and now she’s been with us for the past 8 years and is the fifth member of my family 🙂

Willy Weasel was the one who always got run over in those road safety things for kids. That’s the only famous weasel I know of.

Cheers Barry.

Git is not a swearword as such. It’s means literally “worthless person” so is derogatory I suppose.

We don’t know if it’s a boy or girl yet but think its a boy. It is now starting to respond to the name Weasel, which my sister has been calling him all the time now. She loved the Catweasel suggestion too!! But it seems he’s now Weasel for short.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

What’s Latin for greedy little git? hehe

You don`t know the agro this has caused 🙁
When asking for this translation, the word “git” was regarded as derogetory/swearing.
So I substituted git for cat and they came up with this.

If it`s a boy cat…….AVIDUS PARVUS CATTUS
If it`s a girl cat……..AVIDA PARVA CATTA
If you don`t know it`s gender……PARVUS FELES AVARUS

I’m afraid you’ve got me there! 😮

A friend of ours took on a stray and named it after the day of the week it was found on, so it ended up being called Tuesday.

Things that go pop? Corks! 😉

(I’ve just mentioned this to my husband and he has come out with “How about F’ing?” – I’m sorry, but he doesn’t like cats! )

Erm, a favourite “also” name that I’ve called all my pets at one time or another is Sputnik!

I’m sure something will come to you eventually, and I hope he gets to trust you more.

Thanks FOH,

Hmm, St John is really not right for him… too posh. He’d need a top hat and monocle to pull that one off!

Plus my sister doesn’t like the name Geoffrey for him.

Oh well, thanks for trying, it is appreciated.

Hmm, Mustela… nah it’ll be shortened to musty…

Not sure you are going to like these names.

I’ve found a couple from The Wind in the Willows – St John Weasel and Geoffrey Weasel.

Why don’t you just call it Ceefur?

(C for cat! 😮 )

Ah, a good call on Catweasle, but I think in the long run calling the cat Cat would seem almost as imaginative as when we called our fluffy black cat Balckie, with the nickname of Fluff. We had a brain strain and name disagreements then too and then he started answering to those “interum” names which stuck. hehe

Any more suggestions?
