What will replace the A-7E/H Corsair???

I’m not sure if Portugal is still using theirs, but I know for a fact that the Hellenic Air Force could have done a lot better than going for a type with fuel probe removed, and which is blatantly outdated and annoyingly subsonic.

What will replace this type, assuming they haven’t begun planning to get rid of the type yet?

I honestly believe Greece should have opted for the F-16 Block-30 or even the F-4E rather than procure this type – one that will undoubtedly send many good pilots and navs to their death over enemy soil in the event of regional war.

A small number (say 14-18) of F-15E/H would have certainly been preferrable to two battalions of A7s (around 98), in my opinion, and probably a lot cheaper to maintain.

Assuming the F-35 is not a viable option for Greece – I think it is unrealistic at best right now – I would have scrapped the whole lot and put the saved money into a squadron of 20 F-16 Block-60’s to increase the PGM capability of the HAF over simple firepower capability. I dont think the Eurofighter will suitably fulfil the role left by the A-7’s, and think that the Yak-130 and the newer F-16 types should be explored – the Viper has a much longer service life ahead of it than the A7.

You heard it here first folks. I can’t believe Greece didn’t acquire more F-16’s during the 90’s when it had to maintain a technology gap with Turkey for the same type. The A-7 is probably no substitute for an F-16 in a modern ECM environment populated with advanced SAM’s and fighter-interceptors. …
