What would make you attend an aerojumble?

Hi all,

I thought id ask the question as there has been a bit of interest on the end of the Newark Thread.

I know we have been through this a few times in the past, but what would make you travel to attend an aerojumble.. as these events are slowly declining a little over the past few years.

I know the obvious would be price of entry and location.. but like i have said previously i would personally travel the earth to get the buzz from such an event.. reference price of entry again im more than happy to pay the entry fee as sometimes you can make up this price in what you can purchase as there are savings to be made, rather than pay the internet prices..

But i do appreciate that people haven’t got the extra cash to part with as the current climate financially is a struggle..

But these events do need support if they are to remain on our aerojumble calender.

I guess the best way for reducing prices for sellers and buyers would for the organizers to see an influx of people selling and purchasing, then maybe just maybe they may be able to reduce pricing slightly for the next event.. but if they were to reduce pricing before and the same amount of people turn up or less.. then they could run at a loss, thus spelling the end..

So what for you as a seller or buyer would make up your mind to attend?

The Brooklands museum Retrojumble will be held on Sunday 24th July 2016 this year. This includes aero jumble as well as auto jumble etc. Not normally the best aerjumble on the calendar but still worth giving it a plug as the finding of one elusive item on a stall can always make it worth while. It’s a nice setting and The museum is good for a visit too!

if they can’t do it for lack of manpower, I can’t see how it could continue, as I said before personally for the scale of the last event, the early entrance fee was way too high, and not holding them regularly is not going to help either,

Last I heard, Brenzett were keen to run one but I think they are short on people to carry it through. And I don’t have the time to help them, I’m afraid.

I will ask, but if they do run one then it wont be until late summer I’d think?

There’s nothing on Brenzett’s website to suggest that they are following up on Andy’s-Shoreham-relocated-event, so this year is beginning to look a bit thin.

Did anyone get to Popham last year and was it the same ol’ same ol’?

What would make me go to an aerojumble again?

It would have to be quite a bit – after thirty years of usually two per year!

Kind of miss it. And yet glad to be out of it, especially as the glory days of aero-porn are long gone. 🙁

I remember the good old days of the Aviodome (then at Schiphol Airport) when I had just started collecting for the Halifax cockpit. Thought I was in heaven.
And left with bags full of instruments, switches etc. (later to be replaced due to various reasons). Also attending Shoreham 2003, even more aircraft porn
with Mosquito seat, Typhoon elevators and all sorts of exciting aircraft bits. A day later at Popham same thing again. But things of the past now.
The Aviodrome aerojumbles later went from bad to worse with more sellers of picture postcards, badges and very little parts.

Ours will be on May 14 – and we are cleaning out the stores of our surplus. Should be some good things in there 🙂

I attend the a motoring event and that has some fantastic aerojumbe in the autojumble stalls, most of the stall holders have no clue of what the item is but if they have a clue its ‘Spitfire’ which proves most of the time they have no clue.
Last year there was a nice Jet instrument panel complete, propellers, lots of instruments and a couple of seats. to be honest I pick up more there than an aerojumble for some strange reason.

Yes this is done in Australia there is still insurance and site fee to pay but they range from $5 to $70 for the really big events which run oever a weekend , mostly car stuff/collectables but a bit of aircraft stuff can be found.

Grass roots Swap Meet gathering. Forget the paper work, sellers checks, radiation checks, pre bookings, timings of car movements, insurance etc etc. Back to basics every one turns up at a farmers field on a set date and time and start swapping and selling from the boot of the car without all the accompanying restrictions. Someone told me this is done in Australia, can anyone verify this?

Wearing my thirty-odd year old ‘organiser’s’ hat for a while, Bruce, Junk Collector, Ian, TO and others have hit several nails on the head.

There are so many reasons why aerojumbles fall and fail. All of them having been recited here.

Sadly, we are not ever going to see the like of the early events again, and I’m afraid that numbers through gates + dwindling ‘stock’ + stupid price expectations + logistics and sheer costs of organisation + the fact that many of the ‘old timer’ traders and buyers are no longer with us, makes the whole thing very difficult from an organiser/promoter point of view.

To the best of my knowledge, Brenzett will run again around Easter but from what I have seen the more indoor-related books & models events seem to still be popular and attract a good number of sellers and punters. I have no commercial interest to declare, and no involvement (apart from attending!) but the Croydon Fair on 3 January is always worth a visit. Doors open 10.30 at Aerodrome Hotel. Books, models, toys etc. Don’t expect too much hardware!

I must admit my first reason for having a stall was to get into events early and find ‘all the good stuff’. So far it hasn’t happened! Last weekend two items I might well have bought were picked up long after the public came in. I did find up a nice Harrier panel for a fiver on my last trawl around though, which cheered me.
Not to the same extent as Mysticpuma’s idea though. Top drawer.

Another brief comment with the ‘organisers’ hat on!

For indoor events with a finite number of tables / spaces, like at NAM last weekend; just turning up would be a nightmare to manage and is not something that the museum trustees would contemplate.

Likewise, please see posts #9 and #12 to see why NAM moved away from the ‘just turn-up’ format, which was for several years the format used by NAM! From memory the highest number of sellers with that format was 40.

It does seem that turning selling from the car boot on the day is popular..
not sure though if any organizer would allow this but appears a few people would sell in this manner..

location dosnt seem to be to much of a problem for a few..

lets hope there is to be another Brenzett and the likes..
