We have a thread about what you currently fly. But what light* aircraft would you like to fly? and why?
My Choice:
The Scottish Aviation Bulldog. I spent my teenage years, in the 1970’s, in Girvan on the South Ayrshire Coast and had them flying over the house all the time. Then at the Prestwick airshows I watched pilots like Angus Hamilton showing what it could really do. The real reason though is my father worked at SA at the time, as a toolmaker working on the jigs for the Bulldog (and Jetstream). A lovely little aircraft.

* leaving out the obvious warbirds (Spitfire, Mustang etc)

I’d like to drive my British Racing Green (BRG) E-type to the beach and take off in my Grumman Goose. If that’s too “heavy” then my Widgeon then… to some tiny Caribbean island…

Well, if you put it that way, there’s not question what I’d like a go in….!! 😉
That was taken as read, which is why it was excluded 🙂
For me, any model of pre-war Percival aircraft. Again a family connection. My father served his apprenticeship as a toolmaker at Percival. Or an Auster.

I would take anything that can be flown on a PPL as being ‘light’ so at 9500lbs the Sea Fury counts unlike my choice of the Hunter.

There are tons of aircraft I would like to fly. Sometimes the challenge isn’t in taming the beast; its in persuading the owner to let you have the controls. God bless the ones that do it willingly without question.
I have my name down for a ride in the British Eagle. But I’m not expecting to take the controls!
My current challenge is to tame the savage brutality of the Luscombe. “Get out the way – Janie’s coming in to land!!”

Lighter than a DC3, Daz!
About 9500 lbs., so OK I’ll go back to my original choice…the Mooney Mite. As much fun as you can have with 65hp, and a better flyer than the WAR replicas, Daz.

Baaaa!
Baaaa!
The image was stolen* from Melvyn’s website. However, there is a very strong similarity between me and the photo – they eyes the hair, the smell, the continuous bleeting, the measurement of ram air when flying.
*The invoice is in the post, I’m sure

Steve – how “light” is your Fury? 😉

I have to say it is a wonderful likeness!
You’re sailing very close to the wind there!

Ozplane, if only I had the money.
I shall continue to dream of driving to the airfield in my E-type, and then flying off in the Staggerwing. All I need is those numbers…..

You can come for another trip whenever you like, providing you think your feet can take it! 😉
A very kind offer sir, thankyou. 🙂 Except this time, I shall actually take heed of the dismounting instructions! 😀

Any vintage type would be great. But a Stieglitz, Bu133, Viima, Stearman or the Morane Saulnier 317 would realy be great! I love the sound and looks of the continental and Siemens Sh14 engines.

Yak 139, try Motor Sport. The original **** Protheroe lightweight E-type CUT 7 is up for auction. Feeling wealthy?
By: yak139 - 7th February 2005 at 09:29
Mike, I agree the series 1 are the real E types. A 3.8 drop head would do me fine, but a 4.2 with a synchro box is the one I’d prefer. No Moggy you havent put me off.
Now if you know where there is a “lightweight” E type hiding….
By: Melvyn Hiscock - 6th February 2005 at 23:28
So am I. Only the Mk1 is a ‘real’ E type as the subsequent versions only had 2 windscreen wipers as opposed to the 3 on the Mk1 so the Mk2 and 3 models are imposters 😀

I’d forgotten that one – yes please, me too!
Moggy
Me too. Looking at the number of people who have had their momories jogged with that on I think there’d be a fair wait to fly in one.
By: mike currill - 6th February 2005 at 21:51
Out of the mouths of babes………..! It was/is a classic Jaguar sports car from the 1960s. Moggy is the only one old enough to remember them originally!!!!!

I helped to build this, in a garage, in sub-zero temperatures, but I never got to fly in it.

Yak 52 – Had a couple of goes in one last year. PHWOOOOAAAAARRRRR!!!!!! What a fun piece of kit. Quite happily do that again, but unfortunately bank balance and Julie are unlikely to let me indulge long term. 🙁
