Whats a Geodetic Squadron?

Hello,

I’ve been reading about SAC, 55th in particular, and am wondering if anyone could
inform me about what a Geodectic Squadron was assigned to do?
These squadrons werre around in the late 40s.
Thanks

The above links tell us that they consisted of ground-based surveyors, and ‘didn’t have an aerial mission.’

I found this brief history:
http://www.1370th.org/gsshistory/Our%20Ground%20Geodetic%20Surveyor%20Brethren_2.docx
It starts in May 1954, but implies there was some activity before then.

Geodetic – unless this is an abbreviation?

I tried Google first up and yes it does return some hits but nothing definitive or enlightening.

I’m wondering if its something to do with the DEW line being a part of SAC?

Geodesy is the study of the earth’s gravitational field isn’t it? So did the aircraft undertake measurements over designated areas and frequencies perhaps?
