I am pleased to see Biggin Hill is booking the Sea Vixen again after the tragic events in 2001 .

I believe that ADi have tried to book the Sea Vixen for 2002 and 2003, but there was some issue over insurances for the event. Hopefully this has been sort by now.

provisonal list is:
belgian af magister, messenger ( k21 gliders + chimpmunk tug, paras drop (tbc)

Something different excellent. I don’t think Classic jets are as overpriced as people think. I would like to see some costings though to confirm.

I am going to go to the Isle of Wight event as i see it even if they have the same Aircraft flying as at Duxford at least its a new place to see them in.
As to Vintage jets it is true they get less bookings but it intrests me that free shows like Southend and Eastbourne regularly book Vintage jets but some other large events don’t,I am pleased to see Biggin Hill is booking the Sea Vixen again after the tragic events in 2001 .

Source at Hurn – How many times did you see their Vampires or Venoms last year? Sea Vixen? Why did the Canberra and Meteor go to Australia? Not enough bookings. Our jet scene has never been so full and yet so few bookings.

It’s a two way thing, there must be a reason why the ‘jets’ aren’t book? price? budget? public appeal? …

don’t get me wrong i don’t have the answers 🙁 as Steve has mentioned its a celebration of people too.

The thing is people are moaning about “the same old flightline” anyone been to Old Warden in the last few years, you don’t see them draft in too many visitors…(not that im complaining about that…)

Personally im tempted to give the Isle of Wight a go for D-Day…

Proplover, I’m intrigued by these shows that feature aircraft that aren’t in with the “in” crowd. Examples other than Shuttleworth would be welcome and I might be forced to reconsider the airshow visit budget for the year.

Its always an honour to meet the old boys at varoius events, Im fortunate that several live near me and Im often priviledged to chat with them about aircraft types and their experiances. However the point is that Duxford have for to long wheeled out mostly the same aircraft show after show and then wonder why (apart from Legends which has its own unique atmoshere and a show I visit as often as possible) that crowd numbers are slowly dipping. An associate of mine still uses as an example, the theme of 60th Anniv. of the USAAFUSAF over here – sorry, but he felt what an opportunity missed by Duxford say e.g. get as many available American 40’s period aircraft in the UK there either as staticflightline or some in a flying bye sequence, something unique, different and memorable – what did he get that he could tell me about errrrr the B17, P47,P51 doing a (lovely) routine that if Im not mistaken has been done once, twice three, etc times before. Excellent flying, beautiful aircraft and lovely sounds but is that the most that could of be made of an opportunity? (I still cant believe thats all there was in relation to the “event” but hes adament that was it – perhaps others can enlighten me).
So yes DaveB and S Bond I have started to be more choosey which shows to go for, I am a lover of 30, 40s and 50s piston engined aircraft, who couldnt love a Merlin powered anything, however the shows that offer aircraft which are rarely seen as there owners are perhaps not part of the “in crowd” are the ones I go for now.
Still love going to Duxford to explore the Hangers and look at the fabulous work carried out there so Im not a complete Duxfordphobia person – the moment I see some real variety in one of the shows I’ll be right there.
Just my point of view you know !

(Duxfords crowds usually average about 18-19000.)

I think it has been lower than that in the last few years. Don’t get me wrong I love seeing the based aircraft, I am privilaged to see them very often, a chance many people would love. I just feel that some operators are neglected and are struggling to keep aircraft we would love to see in the air. i thought this year at Duxford would be different, but it seems to be three more same old airshows with Legends in the middle. Come on Duxford, prove me wrong please.

I agree in part that Duxford shows can be a bit “same old, same old” but as others have said it is a priviledge to see the “same olds”. However we shouldn’t forget that they did bring in some great new acts in the shape of the SAA 747 and the chap with the geese at the September show. I also seem to remember a duo in Sukhois at one of the early shows which was very entertaining.
Apparently Wanaka got 90,000 at the three days of their show from a population of 3.5 million. Pro rata that to the UK’s population and you’d get a crowd of 1.3 million. Now that would provide the cash for a few rebuilds to add variety on the flight line. (Duxfords crowds usually average about 18-19000.)

I just wish that they would look at the whole airshow circuit and see what there is out there. I know that they have alot of based aircraft and is great to see them. Yet I have seen the crowds dwindle over the years and if we are not careful it will result in less shows and less money, eventually we won’t beable to hold them. We have a stronger historic aircraft scene then in many countries and we need to support EVERYONE in it. Many companies just arent getting bookings and if this happens we will see a rapid decline of types. All I ask is that the organisers at Duxford obviously support the companies that they have based but also bring in a few different ones each airshow. Give the others some much needed funds to keep their planes in the air and we can hope the large crowds return.

Legends as ever is a great display… do not change a thing!

Two Wildcat’s? Didn’t know they had one airworthy. Don’t you feel a little cheated that they bring all this RAF stuff in on a cheap rate rather than going out and looking for different aircraft. You pay a lot of money to go to these shows and all they do is hit redial on their phone. I feel lucky everytime I see anything fly, but come on guys put some effort in.

…your suggestions then????

DaveB, well said, and as I was trying to hint, it is also a huge privilege to meet the guys who flew them in anger, while we still can.

Looks like the usual Duxford supects – yawn. Sorry guys fed up with different Duxford themes and they wheel out, in general the same aeroplanes. Many of the Duxford based aircraft appear to be displaying at Sandown as well so the flight line may apear to be short of aircraft for periods. You can just about predit what will be in the September show already.
Time to view OW methinks.

Quite apart from the aeroplanes, please don’t forget that the anniversary is all about people too, and there will be a staggering number of veterans present.
