What's good to see here in Germany and the surrounding area?

I’m spending the next several weeks flying out of Frankfurt with the C-17’s and am looking for anything to do that is WWI/ WWII aviation or ground war related.

I’ve seen the Deutsch Museum, Sinsiem, Speyer, Remagen, Verdun, Normandy, Bastogne, Dachau and some of the other well known sights. (Including most of the red light districts) I’m looking for other aviation museums and battle grounds I can see between flying days.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Brad

How was Sinsiem? I want to get over there next time I’m in Europe and see the Tu-144D they’ve got on the roof.

Hermeskeil is definately worth a visit – it’s mostly jets, but a great collection nevertheless.

A nice small museum is down south in the Black Forest area at Schwenningen. It has a few interesting exhibits: one of the German Canberra’s, a Bronco, a Sea Hawk, some Me109 debris, a Skeeter…

Hi Brad,

Go to the Brussels museum.
Great collections of militaria, armour and aircraft in one museum!
I think it’s closed on mondays.
It’s in the middle of Brussels.
You can’t miss it, there is a huge arc de triomphe, and the museum is the building with the howitsers outside.
🙂
The ww 1 aircraft collection is quite rare.

Cheers, Transall.

Have you seen both aircraft exhibitions of the Deutsches Museum? There is the museum in the center of Munich and a dedicated aircraft museum (“Flugwerft”) in a north-western suburb (Oberschleissheim). Highlights at the latter for you would be a genuine Fokker D.VII, a Halberstadt C.IV, and a CASA 2.111 and a Do 24 undergoing restoration. Other points of interest that cross my mind:

– There’s apparently a newly restored, genuine Bf 109 at Speyer, and now a Concorde at Sinsheim so a revisit might be worthwile,
– Luftfahrtmuseum Hannover-Laatzen
– Flugzeugsammlung Leo Junior in Hermeskeil (huge private museum, but the only WWII bird is a CASA 2.111)
– Luftwaffe museum in Berlin-Gatow.
