What's hidden in RAF Storage?

Just as the title suggests, but please concentrate on types which are no longer in service, IF ANY. I’ve heard alot of rumours about Hunters, Canberras, even Vulcans tucked away at places like Stafford, Shawbury, Saints, etc. A visit to a navy Storage depot a few years back revealed scouts and wessex by the dozen, which had left service several years before. Just what IS out there?…….

Referring to the above threads, when reading Rowland White’s excellent ‘Vulcan 607’ it was very fortunate that the RAF were so adverse to actually throwing anything away, when they were getting the Black Buck Vulcan’s refuelling and bombing systems working again!

Still, what’s the use stocking up on parts you will never use.

Cheers

Because one day you never know?! 😉

How many of us have boxes of plane bits and refuse to part with them just in case…..

I have been in contact with Ewan Cameron and he is a very nice and knowledgable guy. Very pleasant to be in contact with.

If you look at the turret cupolas (two Halifax tail turrets Type E among others) it makes your mouth water.
Still, what’s the use stocking up on parts you will never use.

Is this the article? Found it reproduced on the aeroclocks website – fascinating reading.

That’s the one! The main difference these days is that Spitfire RW393 has returned and Ken Hunter has now retired.

On a related topic have a look here.

RAF Stafford Article

Last time I popped my head in it was looking very much as it did in the article which was in the ‘other’ magazine a couple of years ago…

Mike Currill Tut Tut! Even though RAF Honington is no longer the home of the mighty Buccaneer (Although there is one on display by the Main Gate) it is still an RAF Station and the home of the Royal Air Force Regiment and Force Protection Centre. However, the RAF Regt can also “liberate” when appropriate I’m sure!

Manston Airport, if we go to war with Iran (why do people think we might?)then the Prime Minister will authorise the purchase of all the equipment we need overnight and conscript thousands of civilians into the UK armed forces within a week. Yes, right! Nurse, where’s my tablets?!

Back on thread, we do have a Chinook in the basement in the building where I work but its a training aid rather than a stored aircraft. I’m sure all you keen chaps know the serial number (I can’t remember it) and that its an ex-Falklands accident victim.

True enough, all three services are pretty good a liberating things. This is especially true of items of equipment which make your life easier.

Whilst Honington is an RAF base, there are Army units based there as well as RAF regiment.

If Honington is now Army, as I think it is, and the squaddies have got at her there’ll be lots of bits missing as squaddies are notorious for liberating attractive items.

Wattisham has various surplus gazelles stored in some of the HAS’s, plus a couple of written off/BDR gazelles kicking round.

when i was Honingtonin the 80’s there was a prototype/pre production tornado stored in one of the old IX squadron HAS’s. i thought it had been moved when the aircraft left, but i’ve been told recently that its still there……

The RAFM have some storage at Cosford as well as at Stafford.

Check out the pictures I took in this thread

http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=40768&highlight=cosford+storage+hanger

They were taken before the cold war hanger opened so probably some more room in there now!

I’d say the most interesting treasure the RAFM has in store is their Rolls Royce Armoured Car, would love to see that on display one day

Last time I heard it was on display in the RAF Regiment Museum at Honington

Wonder why such an iconic vehicle is there rather than at Hendon – was it only ever on loan to RAFM from the RAF Regiment Association or something like that?

I have no idea what the RAF might or might not have in store, but, if they’re having a clear out, might I suggest they keep an eye out for a couple of CD’s in a plane (geddit?) brown wrapper?

Stafford does indeed hold a number of RAFM treasures, including some Spitfires. The ex Benson gate guard is one, but not sure on the other 1 or 2 airframes. I believe they are held for potential swaps for filling gaps in the collection.

I’d like to see the RAFM Sedburgh VX275 again as I carried my first air cadet passenger in her on 23 Aug 1980 (I wonder where cadet Willard is now?) and had my last flight in a wooden glider in her the next weekend. That was the last day she ever flew. Fond memories.

Another RAFM airframe I’d like to see agin is the Ventura as the last time I saw it was on its delivery to RAF Henlow for storage.
