I’m about as mechanically minded as a Badger but admit to being somewhat fascinated by this little contraption I was shown when visiting a friend’s antique shop. This came into their possession from someone who had worked for many years at Boulton Paul. With it was a plaque marked A I D (Aircraft Inspection Department?) and a couple of other bits of Boulton Paul memorabilia.
The whole lot must weigh in at around 20lbs. I’ve no real idea how to describe the object so will let the photographs do the talking and perhaps some kind soul out there might be able to tell us exactly what it was used for. The part of the machine which comes out of the box appears to be some sort of light source on a pivot which connects to the transformer permanently sited within the case.

Removable tray.

Light source?

Transformer.

Sighting/magnifying tool?

over to you.

AndyG.
Thanks for that, it’s much appreciated. I would be interested to know what your next twist was going to be, as you can see I am something akin to a pawn shop in as much as I will take in anything.
Rob68.
I believe someone from BPA is being contacted on my behalf so we’ll see what that produces.
Robbo.
Never was a fan of Joe90, Thunderbirds, Stingray, Captain Scarlet and Fireball XL5 were much more to my liking.

Try contacting Cyril at the Boulton Paul Association at Wolverhampton, he will reply if you mail him through their web site

Hi, Andy.
That’s great! Now would you mind telling me, in English and in words of one syllable, exactly what it does and, perhaps, hazard a guess at why one was in the possession of a former Boulton Paul employee?
Thanks for the help, it’s appreciated.

Hi Kev,
That looks remarkably like an old GEC calibrator for a brain impulse galvanoscope with the record and transfer function. Circa 1968 I’d hazard a guess. Last time I saw one of those was in the Dept. of Aviation medicine at Farnborough.
