In a report on BBC radio about the Rememberance day 2 minutes silence mention was made of a Emm Kay 1 Swordfish flying over Somerset. Presumably he meant to say a Mark (Mk) 1 Swordfish but BBC political correctness couldn’t allow the use of the company name Fairey in case it offended the LGBT community, nor any mention of the anniversary of Taranto lest if offended the UKs Italian community.:apologetic:

Depends whether it’s about a Swordfish or the BBC commentary on it!!;)

Mods, can we stick this in ‘General Discussion’ please? Some of the nonsense here needs refuting, but not here! In other words, can we take this outside?

Pissant
Why not just Google ‘pissant meaning‘ or even just ‘pissant‘ to find the answer. It’s amazing how useful the internet is.
Because its John Green.

Re 19
..”pissant historical event…”
Always attempting to improve my vocabulary, does anyone know the meaning of ‘pissant’ ? I’ve checked the Oxford Senior and Pitman Dictionary but, nothing there !

Has this thread run its course?
It never really started, so ‘run’ is perhaps being a bit kind.

I hope so!

For Beermat:
The Fabian Society is a British socialist organization whose purpose is to advance the principles of socialism via gradualist and reformist effort, rather than by revolutionary overthrow but there seems to have been ‘mission creep’ over the years and a modified form of communism is now the aim. The spin used by the BBC has been commented on by many and there are a number of websites (such as Biased BBC) that list their more blatant efforts. Sorry to bring politics into the mix but I detest the dumbing down that occurs.
Oh we get the same tired ill-informed and basically silly remarks about the Australian Broadcasting Corporation made out here. They are as usual made by ignorant people who seem to think that life is perfect if you are a self-made squillionaire or one of their hangers on. The sort of people who don’t believe in a fair society because it prevents them from milking others to their heart’s content. The BBC and ABC cater to a broad reach of opinions and taste and so of course at some time some person is going to feel offended – big deal, at least the diversity of views is being offered. Just listen to the commercial broadcast media if you want real dumb. Better the BBC or the ABC than what passes for programming originality on the commercial broadcast media.
The truth of the matter is probably as explained earlier that perhaps the announcer was unfamiliar with how “Mk” should be pronounced. So I guess that my earlier comment about ignorance should also be expanded to include the ignorance of some people who can’t understand that there are people in the world who don’t have the same encyclopedic knowledge of some pissant historical event as they do.

I expect errors from the dumbed down BBC. It is in my opinion the de facto headquarters of the Fabian Society.
The Fabian Society has nothing to do with BBC………..entirely separate organisations.

Probably no more than a reporter completely unaware of what they are looking at (there are very few of the other type) asking someone “What’s that?” and getting the reply “A Mk.1 Swordfish.”.
On the other hand, my local cafe has just put packets of Swordfish coffee in the window, with a nice picture of said biplane on the packet, but no mention of the “F” word.

This thread is confusing me.
Rosevidney1, why would the Fabian Society dumb anything down – presuming you mean the group established by George Bernard Shaw and H.G. Wells?

Is this the same group who talk about ‘black boxes’ (after an aircraft incident) as if they are the ‘experts’?
What are these ‘black boxes’? After all those years working on aircraft as well …………………….
