I completed the game by totally disregarding the orders in the early missions. There’s one where you desend upon a village from a hill with the objective of taking out the three shilkas. Unfortunatly the AI of my team was lowsy and most if not all of the team gets killed before we get near the village. Being a lowly soldier you can’t destroy the Shilka or the BMP before your team gets wiped out so at the start of the level i turn to the LAW guy and take him out with a bullet (cruel but then due to his stupidity he never takes out either the BMP or shilka before he dies thereby putting the entire squads lifes at risk, so i see it as a necessary evil 😀 ). I then nab the LAW and take out the BMP and Shilka meaning the majority of the squad survives… at least until we reach the next village.

Every time i play that mission i am the only surviver out of all the allied squads

Finally downloaded the Flanker 2.5 upgrade files. Does it make the game better to any significant degree?

BTW being a bit of a gun nut I kinda am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to modelling weapons in games… a character flaw I know but other than modesty I have so few other flaws… }>

I choose Abrams tanks as targets because they are so tough as depicted in the game. The best tactic is to shoot around a corner at them of course but as you are not very mobile with a rocket launcher I tend to stand back from the wall I am firing around in case the target spots me and fires and hits the wall, or if the rocket I fire hits the wall.
If you are aiming at a target and you can see his gun… then his gun can see you… aim for the corner of the the tank.

The first mission I played of Opfp was the demo where the enemy sends in tanks. I used to ignore orders and just hang around and take out the tanks one by one by first eliminating the BMP from the top village and then sneak down and get rocket ammo from the ammo crates (dealing with the infantry from max range with my rifle first) and then creep around and fire single rounds at the tanks from different angles till I killed them… about three hits each would do it usually… 🙂

Hehehehe… what you do with Hinds, I do with M1s. In a reasonably large village with plent of ammo boxes spread around it is quite fun taking on tanks an crews from damaged tanks. It is a bit more tactical with tanks as you can set traps with mines and satchel charges.. }>

I’m gonna have to give that a go, there nothing quite like the feeling when a tank brings its turret to bear on you… a real brown trouser moment 😉

I know 3dfx no longer support the cards, as nVidia bought them out, but VoodooFiles is a site that holds a listing of 3rd party drivers.

If you click 3dfx (3rd Party) then click List All Results at the bottom of the page and do Find for Voodoo2 you will find some DX 8 drivers.

Here is the link to the files http://www.voodoofiles.com/7540 with that you should be able to play DX 8 games on your Voodoo 2

With Codename Eagle i never realled worried about diff ammo etc, i just have it for the MP fun. But with Battlefield 1942 about its a replacement for it, even though someone made a Codename Eagle mod for BF1942. You should see how well the Zeplin loops 🙂

Thanks for the Link Nikumba, but the makers of the Voodoo cards no longer support them… they got bought out by a company that wanted their technology, but has not supported their older cards.

BTW I notice you include Operation Eagle in your list… I played the demo and quite liked the game but never saw it in the shops. The only thing I didn’t like was that all the guns used the same ammo… I prefer it when ammo supplies mean that you have to change weapons to save certain types of ammo… ie pistol ammo is only good for close range or indoors, so you use your pistol inside so that if you have to fight outside later you still have ammo for the rifle etc etc.

I haven’t played Ghost Recon yet but my brother has nd he likes them both, though he likes the graphics of ghost recon better, but he likes the fact that you can pick up weapons in opfp better than the setup in ghost recon… if your AT guy in GR dies that is it… no one can pick up his AT weapon and use it… if you need to kill a tank you have to start the mission again…

Nahhh, I just don’t want to be obsolete so quickly this time around, so I am looking at a newer card in the 128MB range.
Looking at spending around $400 on it.

I bought Il-2 knowing I couldn’t play it (due to my system) because it was only $40. (full price games are about $120 here).

A few years ago after playing for about 14 hours straight against my fellow students at Counter Strike on my way home I looked back and saw someone standing in a window high up on a building. Without thinking I stopped, crouched, and raised my arms to aim at him, trying desperately to see what weapon he was carrying so I knew which side he was on… (he was back lit so I couldn’t see what he was wearing).

I never really got into driving games till I played with a force feedback steering wheel. My brother has one, but I haven’t been up to test it yet. The one I played with in a shop was awesome… I am glad I didn’t have my wallet with me as it was about $400.
You could actually feel the road, when you left the tar seal and got onto gravel, and if you got airborne the wheel went loose, and then jumped to one side when you hit the ground again.
My brother has quite a few driving games including the type where you just go round and round in an oval… after about an hour his arms hurt from the forces through the steering wheel.
Completely changes the game…

Not phyical but psycological:

I remember first time i played Syndicate on the Amiga i was pretty horrified when i used the flamer to set somone on fire and they ran around screaming… that left me sitting at the computer pretty stunned at the time feeling pretty bad about myself.

After i’d done it a few more time though i was loving it… talk about computer desensitizing you.

Talking of OPF have you ever played with the Editor? My favourite thing to do is place myself in the centre of a village with about 4 Hinds chasing me and then trying to knock them out of the sky with Laws… thats gets the old adrenalin going even more so when the pilots bail out and hunt you down on foot, hours of fun 😀

I do like Comache 4, it is a good game, if not hard. Its a nice arcady type, but Comanche 3 was the best of the Comanche line. MP ok Comanche 4 is good fun, using Hellfires as anti-air missles 🙂 Flares dont help you when i got a laser lock on you 🙂

NFS is a good quick an deasy arcade racer, ive not really played a racer since the days of Grand Prix 3 & 4 by Geoff Cramond.

I do play OpFor a bit its not my fav game but can be fun in a massive online or lan game.

Whatever happened to Flanker 3.0?

I don’t get into too many of the “combat” oriented games, but apart from Flanker 2.0 I do like Age of… and Command and Conquer.

Most of the games I get into are FPS games where many things get to die, due to a result of my intervention in their lives. Such as: Red Faction 2, Halo (you HAVE to play this one), Alien vs Predator.

Ace Combat 04 for PS2 is another good one, even if the realism sometimes is out the window. Such is the advantage to having two console systems 😀

nikumba- Thanks for the advice. BTW, I like your webpage. Do you really like comanche4? Its just awful. I noticed you also listed Need for Speed2, thats just too easy of a driving game, you can keep the car floored all the time no matter how tight the turns are. The best driving game Ive done so far is a road rally one on Xbox, they did an oustanding job of simulating the realistic physics of driving a car. On operation flashpoint you get to drive alot of jeeps and trucks which is alot of fun, you use the mouse instead of arrow buttons so it really feels like your steering. I think Ive killed more enemy soldiers running them over with the truck than shooting them.

PC games give warnings about people going into seizures due to “flashing lights” in games. When I first started playing FPSs, the graphics and enemy tactics were so real that I felt I was really going to get my head blown off by being so startled. Anyone hear of anyone having severe physical reactions to pc games?

I agree, I have a gainward TI4200 Geforce4 and its great. I bought it last summer and they dropped the price a week later so like Nikumba says best to wait 😉

The specs for your machine are very good, apart from your graphic card. The MX440 is designed as a budget card, and does not have the power to run the more modern games at higher resolutions.

The MX440 is severly underpowered even compared to the older cards. If you want to play the games in higher resoulutions you will have to get a new graphic card. The GeForce Ti4200 are cheap and are VERY good cards, but with nVidia’s white elephant coming out and ATi new card also due out in the next month, we could well see graphic card prices dropping.

If you wait you could get yourself a nice bargin.

It is a sequel to Il-2 sim, which is incorporated into the FB. It features Finland, Hungary and Lvov maps beside the original Il2 maps…

Thanks for the offer to help on my comp problems guys, its a real stumper, but heres the story: I had originally an Athlon 1700xp 256ram and used onboard video to play video games. I started having alot of problems with games malfuntioning, shutting down and getting warning messages until finally it just died. I took it in and found that I had fried the graphics part of my processor. So now I have a new Athlon 1800xp, and a new motherboard (broke the orignial trying to play Mr Fixit man) 512 ram and a Geforce4 64mb mx440 graphics card. I also had my harddrive formated and win98 installed a couple of times. So now my comp seems to be running ok except for an occational illegal fuction message after playing a game and the slow motion problem when running C&C generals. Others games like RTCWolfenstien seem to run ok. Theres a definate delay when I turn fast in Max Paine, so I have to use 800×600 for fast shooting on that (Im not a wimp who relys on the slo-mo feature of that game. So what could it be? Could I still have a virul problem after haveing my HD formated? Could my ram be screwed up? I havent installed an antivirus since I dont have internet, and I couldnt update it anyways. Frankvw told me about this russian antivirus AVP, anyone use that?

Ive seen that Il-2 Forgotton Battles, the expantion for Il-2 has just been released in the US. Has anyone got it yet?

Garry- Thanks for the tips on shooting for OpFP. Thats my second favorite game after Ghost Recon. The AI on both these games is top notch, I really feel the enemy soldiers know how to use cover and flanking tactics quite well. On Ghost Recon most the levels are where soldiers are stationed at posts and waiting and wont attack unless they see you or you start shooting. A major exception to that is level 3 where theres about 50 troops escorting tanks, once you shoot at them, thats it, theyre all after you and wont stop till they get you. OpFP is realistic in the way that the enemy is moving through an area so the fighting is very dynamic in that you dont know what theyll do as they move into an area. BTW, why dont you just buy a new graphics card? A 64mb should only run between $70 and $90, are you that poor?

As Domin said sounds liek something is wrong on your PC. Make sure you have the latest DirectX (www.microsoft.com/directx) the latest nVidia drivers (www.nvidia.com) and defrag your hard drive.

That should solve some problems.

Yes, I like it too.
At very close range I use 3 round burst and aim a little low (ie their feet) and use the floating cursor to aim. This is because it gives me a better field of view when the bad guys are close. I also try to hit them with two shots or bursts (depending upon which I have set) before I even consider looking for a new target.

For longer range targets I always use single shot, with MGs I try to squeese off one or two round bursts, and I always use the weapons sights.

I am a bit disappointed with the SVDs scope as although the markings are correct the ranging method is not.

I am also a bit fussy regarding accuracy and small errors, like the AK-74 does not have a 3 round burst capability (well no AK-74s the Soviets used anyway.. Romanian AK-74s had a three round burst), and the fact there is no Soviet 50 cal HMG. The Hind D model is depicted in the game but it has F model weapons. The BMP-2 has the commander in the hull behind the driver even though the BMP-2 has a two man turret especially so that the vehicle commander could enjoy a better view of the battlefield in the turret. etc etc… 🙂

Also I always go prone when I am shooting for a more stable shot and better shot recovery.

The binoculars are invaluable… take them from enemy officers when you can.

Another game I am playing at the moment is Sub Command. I am finding it rather difficult as it is quite complex, but it is interesting and it allows land attack missiles to be used and the whole world is mapped.

Dude if you have that spec machine and its running slowly i think you have a problem with it… i have athlon 1800Xp (1.5mhz) 512 ram and a 128mb geforce4 and i no trouble running anything. If you give us a detailed list of your machines ins and outs maybe we can give you a few performance tips 😉
