Looking at the new image on Google Earth of Biggin Hill airfield I have noticed this strange object in the South East corner. Anyone know what it is / was?
Tony.

It is indeed a soak away. I had a look at it close up a few years back, nice brickwork and some iron taps but thats about it. There is also one by the entrance to the Leavesden estate opposite the Airport enterance.

Hi Tony, check out post #18 of this thread, http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?t=107538, that is a typical RAF airfield RSP.

Record Site Plans, Hendon holds them and they can be obtained from them or Motor Books.
They were drawn over various years and show all buildings and installations at a specific time.
Another way to confirm what it is is to see if anyone that works there can get a picture of it.

Wow thanks Pagen01. I didn’t even know something like that even existed. Now showing even more ignorance, what’s an RSP?

It looks like an over grown or dissused water interceptor / seperator sluice to me, these are concrete construction and built just below ground level, they take the run off water from hardstandings and runways etc and seperate the oil/fuels etc from the water which then returns to the normal water course.
An RSP for the site should confirm this.

Thanks Tony,
Hadn’t looked at the Photo’s Forum.

Our friend ‘spitfireman’ says on “Biggin Hill Airshow” (in the Airshow Photos forum) ‘Definately last year, my Spitfire is there, alongside TFH Hurricane just north of the VC10, behind the crowd line.’

Anyone have any idea what year the Google Maps image of Biggin Hill was taken? Looks like the Air Fair, with B-17, VC-10, a plethora of Spits, and interestingly (if you look at the main runway) the Reds just landing on.

To me, it looks like the upper section has been removed from a building that lies partly underground.
What we can see (partly overgrown) is the pattern of beams that both supported the ground-level floor and formed the roof of the sub-ground level storey.

It looks like some kind of boat! Maybe a preserved relic form times gone by?
