I took this photo of a preserved flying boat at the Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland back in 1995, and I do not know what type it is. Can anyone out there tell me?

This aircraft is indeed an MR 5, NZ4115 (c/n 1552), built originally for the RAF as SZ584. It also served for a short time with BOAC as G-AHJR, before going to the RNZAF in 1953. It was donated to the Museum in 1966. I got this info from an excellent site which has full details of the Sunderland in RNZAF service, as well as some more good photos of the aircraft.
Check out the link to go to the site:

This aircraft looks like a Sunderland flying boat.
I heard an interesting story from an ex-230 Sqn Sunderland crew member: his Sunderland was fitted with a deep fat fryer for cooking on those long sorties. A U-boat was spotted late and the pilot put the aircraft into a hard turn. Unfortunately the fryer was on the go, and boiling fat went everywhere. Luckily, no one was injured – but any injury would made for an unusual ‘wait till you hear my war story’ as the scar was revealed. 🙂

Short Sunderland. Possibly MR 5. Not absolutely sure about the mark though.

Even a “beer expert” with over 500 posts in this forum should recognize a Short Suderland!
