Whats this in the background…?

Ok posted this over at Secret Projects a while back but no joy at an id.. so thought id try here…

Its an odd one from Michael JH Taylors book, Military Prototypes of the 50’s… no not the flying jeep in the foreground, but the H5 in the background on the left… What’s with the “rotor” assembly…? I’ve been wondering about this one for the best part of 20 years…!

Any ideas folks…?

Floatation pad in case it lands in water inverted????:D

Seriously though, it does appearto be attached to a rig connected to an S-51 cockpit section!!!!

You know, id never thought that it might not actually be part of the H5…

Power take off test stand seems pretty plausible as well…

Perhaps a test device for the Flying Jeep programme using a power takeoff from the H.5 to power the fans to gather test data. The other H.5 just appears to have a heavily shrouded rotor head.

Looks like some crazy structure built on top of a Sikorski S-51 (Westland Dragonfly as we knew it).

Are you sure it’s actually part of the H-5, or is it some kind of structure (haven’t a clue what) over it?
